Show IO HILL TOP TIMES Friday, April 4, 1986 MlDIly By Brent T. Aguirre wd Motorcycles! "No matter how many times you ride or how good a rider you are, you're going to get into problems," said Jack Gill, a Hollywood stunt coordinator and a man who has learned the hard way. Mr. Gill has been in the business for 10 years performing and coordinating stunts in TV series and mo chase material for an upcoming stunt. "As I rounded a curve in the road, a car was stopped dead center blocking both lanes of traffic. With no place to go on the right and a 60 foot drop off on the left, I had to lay the bike down," he said. "Picking myself up (it was obvious his professional experience saved his life) I approached the driver of the car and asked why he had stopped in the middle of the road. He said, 1 just wanted to check my tires.' " Mr. Gill explained, "Accidents do happen. Even during a stunt rehearsal, many times things go wrong, causing an accident. You've got to remember when you're riding in live traffic (on the streets) you don't have the luxury of 3,000 pounds of metal surrounding you. Know where your controls are and get away from cars. "If the bike does go down, get The class is mandatory for those who want to register motorcycles on base; however, instructor Terry Ol- vies such as "Dukes of Hazard," "Fall Guy," "Knight Rider," "Magnum Force" and the initial "First Blood." The class covers a road test and unexpected hazards and safety precautions such as flat tires, bad clutch cables, baggage, traveling with riders and others. Stressed is protective gear, especially helmets. "Take care of the helmet, and the helmet will take care of you," said Mr. Olsen, "Don't ride around with your helmet dangling from your bike. Wear it!" A helmet may also make it easier for a cyclist to be seen another safety precaution. "Motorcycles are difficult to see and you should constantly look for people who may dart in front of you," Mr. Gill stressed. "Also remember the blind spots when approaching vehicles and stay out of those areas. People can stop suddenly and you're into the back of them." He explained how easily this situation can happen. "The bike will have no mercy on the rider and can 'chew you up.' Hitting the pavement is like going down a cheese grinder." Another hazard is wet pavement. "It's bad news," he said, "especially with dirt bikes. The rains bring road oil to the surface and dirt pattern tires have very little rubber on the road.
