Show 48 HILLTOP TIMES Friday, April 5. 1985 spo rts brief: 7 Academy boxers claim regional title after the Seven members of the Air Force Academy boxing team qualified for the 1985 national championships after winning titles in the midwestern regional championships. Air Force won its sixth consecutive team title in the regionals held at the Cidadel, Charleston, S.C., March 15 and 16. "Seven teams took part in the regionals and the competition was really strong," said Air Force head coach Ed Weichers. "At first I felt we could sweep the tournament, but our guys faced some stiff challenges, with our losses being by close decisions." Regional winners for the academy were juniors Jim Holley (132 pounds), Randy Gibb (147), Joe Wiggins (172) and Steve Steadman (180). "Stead-ma- n won the silver medal in the 1984 nationals, and he really looked strong over the weekend," said the coach. Seniors Sean Amuan (119), Tom Geoghan (125) and Dave Thompson (heavyweight) each won by walkover in the final round. Amuan was a 1983 national champion. Defending national champion Gregg Christmas lost a unanimous decision in the d bout, but for his efforts received the sportsmanship award. "He fought a heck of a fight and it is a heart-breakto see him end his career after coming so far," said Coach Weichers., Air Force finished with 75 points, followed by the Citadel with 16. Ohio University and the University of Miami (Ohio) were third with 14 each. The Falcons now must prepare to defend the national title they have won in four of the last five years. Air Force won the National Collegiate Boxing Association's national crown in 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1984. In 1982 the Falcons were second nationally.. "The nationals are not going to be easy," Coach Weichers said. "A team will probably have to win at least three bouts to claim the title. Everyone is 156-poun- er always champion, and we are the defending champs. We are going to have to train extra hard if we expect to win again."
