Show I HILL TOP TIMES 37 Friday, March 9, 1984 Pracifoce weighs control daily; Hill AFB hosts Editor's note: Excerpted from Total annual ski meet a day. These calorie differences between intake and use are the underlying cause of obesity. By Laurence E. Morehouse, Ph.D. Author of Total Fitness By David Ovard Halt obesity Fitness. Civilian Recreation Coordinator For most people, just a minor adjustment of a few hundred calories can reverse the process. The adjustment can be made by eliminating one cup of coffee or by eating smaller portions at dinner time. By running in place, jogging, doing pushups or situps, you can break even. Once you're even, one more adjustment of either less intake or more energy output will mean that you're using more calories than you're ingesting. Then, the body will use its stores of energy and you will be burning fat. Fat cells in the body are the storage bins of excess food intake. Fat is rich in blood vessels. With every extra pound of fat, miles of new blood vessels are laid down. To receive a blood supply, these vessels have to draw blood away from other body organs. This demand places a strain on the heart. That's why the overweight person doesn't have the life expectancy they would have if they were lean. Weight control is as easy to achieve as muscular and cardiovascular endurance. For an effective weight control program, you don't need to starve yourself or eliminate foods of any kind. It is not necessary to lose more than a pound per week. That's 52 pounds a year, enough to satisfy anyone. If you are a bit more active and if you make a tiny adjustment in your calorie intake, you've got to lose weight. There is no other way to lose weight permanently without injuring your body. The human body works exactly like an engine: It obeys the laws of physics, principally the law of conservation of energy. The energy that translates into work must first enter the body as food. When a person uses more energy than they receive in caloric food content, weight must be lost. When a person takes in more caloric food content than expended, adult eats weight must be gained. The average-size- d about 2,400 calories a day and uses 2,300 calories Spring skiing comes late in March, and this year's 22nd Annual Air Force Invitational Ski Meet has attracted more than 242 top racers from 57 Air Force bases around the world.
