Petersen CBPO O .!!'"iifl I ""n " ,:: H !! "II 11 i;; K ' 11 .. i ! nflll A Freedom Foundation luncheon ' honoring heroes didn't sound like anything extraordinary. Little did I know "inspiring" would be the word to describe each recipient's struggle to overcome severe hardships and sometimes debilitating handicaps. The occasion was the Utah Chapter of the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge ceremony honoring nine Utah heroes Feb. 22 at Little America's Grand Ballroom in Salt Lake City. Theme for this George Washington's birthday luncheon was "We Believe in Heroes." : And heroes they were, as evidenced by their stories narrated by Spencer Kinard, a local television news director. I wasn't prepared for the emotional impact exemplified by the recipients' courage and dedication. The first two heroes were a married couple, Clyde and Pat Braegger, who were both afflicted by polio and one of whom was confined to an iron lung. They overcame great obstacles to get married and became highly respected members of their community despite their severe handicaps. Another kind of hero was Rulon Doman, a devoted scoutmaster for 65 years, who made many contributions to changing young men's lives. The last hero, but not the least, was George Wallen, another Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who was a medic with the Marines as they landed on Iwo Jima. He suffered several serious injuries, but made great personal sacrifice to drag himself over the battlefield saving numerous lives and administering to the wounded. I was deeply moved by these special stories of heroism and I left feeling a little ashamed because I complain about petty, everyday things, and about working extra hours on mobility exercises or pulling extra duty. I felt totally humbled by sharing the experiences of these heroes and knew I really had nothing to complain about in life. These people are heroes in the truest sense of the word. I found myself wondering what I would have done in their situations. I shudder to think I might ever be tested as they were. I hope that by telling my experience we all might do a little less grumbling and complaining about, the trivial things in life. Col. Joseph H. Battaglia, base commander, summed it up appropriately as we left the hotel. He said, "By comparison, what have we really done for our country?" She has fought back, and is pursuing her goal of becoming a school teacher. Bernard Fisher won a Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic deeds in unselfishly rescuing a comrade in arms during the Vietnam War. He landed his A1E aircraft amid heavy enemy fire, picked up his friend, and then flew out. An athlete like no other was Rodkey Faust, the youngest ever to complete three triathlons in a period. He swam 2x2 miles, rode a bike for 100 miles, and finished by running a full marathon. g The story of Peter tears to my eyes. He Jeppson brought was in an automobile accident that burned more than 90 percent of his body and was not expected to live or if he did, not a normal life. Mr. Jeppson suffered excruciating pain during one year of hospitalization followed by months of corrective surgery, skin grafts, and plastic surgery. But, he fought back and is now a successful business and family man with a wife and family.
