Show 22 HILL TOP TIMES Friday, January 13, 1984 Competition enhances maintenance By SSgt. Ruth Scarpino 388th TFW Public Affairs Office mander and one senior noncommissioned officer. The deputy commander for maintenance and the wing commander, or his representative, then select the overall wing winner. V "The judges look at overall cleanliness, There is more to" a dedicated crew chief's job in the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing than just making sure are "mission capable. All aircraft fornis must be standardized and completed, mission support equipment must be maintained-an- d jets must be cleaned and polished to keep them looking good. Many of the special efforts a crew chief or assistant crew chief puts into maintaining their aircraft goes unnoticed. A new wing program, "Preened Falcon," recognizes those people who do that little bit extra. The program was established last summer by the 388th TFW commander, Col. Charles C. Helton, to enhance the appearance of the wing's 6 fleet. "Preened Falcon is actually a competition between all dedicated crew chiefs for the cleanest and best supported aircraft within the wing," said CMSgt. Arlyn Deveraux, 388th TFW maintenance superintendent. All four Aircraft Maintenance Units enter one aircraft in the monthly competition. Each unit winner is selected by a team consisting of one Aircraft Generation Squadron commander, the squadron maintenance superintendent, either the Equipment Maintenance or Component Repair Squadron com which in- cludes the entire aircraft surface, canopy, cockpit, intake, landing gear and engine area," said Chief F-1- 6s . F-1- Deveraux. "Standardization, currency, cleanliness and completeness of forms as well as the condition of support equipment chocks, pins, covers, etc. are also judged." Once an aircraft wins the unit award, that aircraft and crew chief are not eligible to compete in the next month's competition. However, if a previous winner still has the best looking aircraft in the unit,-- the crew chief will still receive a three-da- y pass. A new wing winner is selected on or near the 28th of each month. The winning crew chief receives a large scale and the assistant crew chief model of the 6 receives an engraved plaque. The name of the crew chief is placed on the wing trophy which is kept in the current winner's maintenance unit. Chief Deveraux praised the program saying, "This program not only recognizes some of the wing's outstanding performers but also is a very effective incentive program which has improved the status and appearance of the wing's 6 fleet tremendously."
