Effective immediately, the Customs Service is implementing a vigorous campaign to prevent the illegal impor- -' tation of trademarked items. As part of this program, the Customs Service has issued the following warning: The Customs Service will be looking for and seizing import items bearing counterfeit trademarks." These items consist mainly of Gucci and Louis Vuitton bags, LaCoste shirts, Ralph Lauren polo shirts, Rolex watches, and numerous designer jeans. These articles are manufactured Recently the U.S. Customs Service has encountered an increasing problem with the importation of legitimate and counterfeit trademarked articles such as designer clothes, watches and computers. Most major manufacturers of these popular items have registered their trademarks with the U.S. Customs Service. The registration of a trademark with the Customs Service provides the trademark owner with certain protective rights and requires the Customs Service to enforce those rights. :!;,:.: -- ; primarily in Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Additionally, the Customs Service will be looking for and seizing import items bearing legitimate trademarks. Some trademark owners do not permit importation of their products bearing legitimate trademarks in any quantity, even for personal use. The Customs Service, however, provides an administrative exemption allowing importation of. one legitimately trademarked item per traveler. However, the Customs Service encourages travelers not to purchase the following items: LaCoste, Britannia, Ralph Lauren, Fila, Calvin Klein, Members Only, Jordache, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. The Customs Service strictly prohibits importation, of fake Apple computers and Apple lookalikes with names such as Banana or Pineapple, using copyrighted Apple operating systems.
