Mike Griffin Ogden ALC Public Affairs Many of us think, of a fight after school as meeting an adversary behind the gym or some other place on the way home from classes. There is a group of students in Davis County who fight one another each day after school from the beginning of September through October. No, they are not fighting to establish territories at the beginning of the school year. They are members of school wrestling teams. Two such scrappers are Larry Quintana and Steve Brown of Davis Central Junior High School in out-of-the-w- ay Layton. .Larry, 14, is the son of Robert and Sinforsa Quintana of Layton. Mr. Quintana is a quality control inspector of F-- 4 aircraft for the Directorate of Maintenance and is also a senior master sergeant in the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron . (Reserve). Steve, 14, is the son of Mike and Lynn Brown of Layton. Mr. Brown works in the 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron, and Mrs. Brown is employed in the Directorate of Maintenance, Landing Gear Division. Both boys, who are finishing their last year at Central, topped their weight class in the 1982 Davis District Wrestling Tournament at Clearfield High ' School recently. Larry and Steve went during the tourney to 11 up their season records to wins against no losses. All of Steve's victories were by pins. Larry is 5 feet 2 inches tall and fights in the class while 3-- 0 105-poun- d (U.S. Air Force Photo by MSgt. Lynn Foxley, who has coached the Central wrestling team since it was formed 10 years ago, said both boys have great balance and technique. "Once they get into high school and get some experience with the bigger boys, they could prove to be the best ever to come from Central," Coach Foxley noted. What prompted Larry and Steve to start wrestling? Larry said, "I got into wrestling because my brother-in-lais a wrestling coach in Colorado." Steve admits that he wrestles because of a cousin who is in the sport at Layton High School. Mrs. Brown said she and her husband attend all of Steve's matches. "The matches are exciting," she said, "but it is kind of scary watching Steve throw someone around or worse yet being thrown around by someone." She gives credit for Steve's success in wrestling to Coach Foxley. "He taught Steve everything he knows about the sport and is just super with all of the boys. Steve gets 'help', while he is wrestling. His father twists and turns and wrestles right along with him from the audience," she joked. Mr. Quintana thinks Larry is well balanced and keeps his cool under pressure. "Of course, I may be a little prejudiced," he said, "but other people have commented to me on Larry's wrestling abilities. I get excited at all of his matches," he added. Both boys head to Layton High School next year. And if what they have accomplished in wrestling over the last two years at Central is any indication, they should have bright futures fighting after school for Layton. 98-pou- nd w tit I VllK (U.S. Air Force Photo by MSgt.
