America was frightened all its sophisticated technology seemed useless against this killer. In that same year, a group of mothers in Phoenix, Ariz., raised thousands of dollars for polio research. They became the first members of an army of mothers across the nation who mounted campaigns to raise money for polio research. It's now the No. 1 killer of children over age 1. In 1979, motor vehicle accidents took the lives of 1,500 toddlers and infants under the age of 5. Of these, 640 were on foot and 10 were on pedalcycles when they were struck by vehicles. The rest, nearly 60 percent of the total, were almost all car passengers. These were children too small to protect themselves.
