This continues the upward curve of activity which has made it the third busiest single runway airfield in the Air Force. The number three title was earned during 1980 when 145,243 operations were recorded here. An aircraft operation is logged every time an aircraft takes off or lands. Aircrews of these units often come accompanied by a full complement of maintenance and support personnel to temporarily swell the Hill population. The base also serves as an alternate airfield for Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, and Nellis AFB, Nev. Utah's relatively mild weather and accompanying good visibility contribute to Hill's effectiveness as a staging base. The airfield is rarely closed and the control tower is staffed at all times. Private aircraft occasionally use Hill k hours to practice flying during with the Precision Approach Radar and the Instrument Landing System navigational aids available. The field is F-1- 6s constantly training for combat readiness, the runway logs more operations than most commercial and military airfields. The 388th TFW accounts for about 90 percent of the runway operations. Normal flight training of the wing such as strafing, bombing and combat is enhanced by its proximity to the Utah Test and Training Range, a 1.8 million acre reserve west of the Great Salt Lake. Their home here for more allows more opportunity less time and flight training with fuel the of for fighter expenditure aircraft. The relationship between the base and the test range brings frequent visitors as the prime refueling and air-to-a- off-pea- always available for military, commercial or private aircraft ir ' emergencies. Hill's single runway does lead to some traffic jams during infrequent, but violent storms. The storms created by the land mass funnel occurring between the Great Salt Lake and the mountains come on suddenly and small fighter aircraft training on the range must land very quickly, taxing the airfield and tower personnel to the utmost.
