Show July 11 n Cotton spoils "Sixteenth Tactical Fighter Training Squadron, Sergeant Cotton." The resonant tones of the sergeant's voice came across the phone with clarity and confidence, characteristic of a man who makes his living speaking. And so he might, some day. When TSgt. Rico Cotton is not making his living performing the administrative duties required by the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing's TFTS, he spends his time as a disc jockey a hobby he hopes an FM radio station one may day become his career. Sergeant Cotton's passion for working in 16 in radio began while he was stationed at Langley AFB, Va., and continued during a tour in Thailand. Shortly after arriving here in 1979, he began communication courses at Weber State College and soon after was given a show at the college's FM radio station. To Sergeant Cotton, however, the role of DJ is more than just "spinning records." With gas going up, rent going up and inflatiion all over, how can you be happy? "That's the job of the DJ, to try to make things better," the sergeant said. "I always hope that when I finish my show, somebody is much happier log soles big business July 7 marked a milestone of military exchanges around the world. That's the day when the new "Exchange Catalog 81" became available. It's also the first time that the mail order operations of the Army and Air Force' Exchange Service and the Navy Resale and Services Support Office are combined in one catalog. Catalog sales are big business, with $48 million on the books during last year and projected sales for the combined operation in the neighborhood of $55 million this year. As in the past, the catalog, will be issued in two editions, one for the continental United States and one for overseas.1 This is necessary because of Congressional restrictions on the sale of certain items in the U.S. Plans call for 650,000 copies to be printed for distribution overseas where customers may pick up a personal copy at their exchange facilities. the United States, customers take may In advantage of the sign-ou-t program at all stores to take a copy home for five days. INTERVERTEBRAL DISC The degenerative intervertebral disc is a condition which develops over a period of time. It develops as the result of an injury causing direct damage to the disc and causing the spine to function abnormally. Sometimes, as the result of an injury, the muscles around the vertebrae tighten up, trying to support the injured area, Titis can develop a locking into what is called a "fixation" together of the vertebrae. Inhibiting motion. Motion is very important to the health of the Intervertebral disc because the disc depends largely upon this motion for fluid exchange. Nutrition must be carried into the disc by this fluid movement, and waste products must be carried out of the disc. This action is lost when a vertebral fixation is present. As a result of the lack of fluid exchange, which is called imbibition, the disc dehydrates and thins. It has poor shock absorber capability, and is subject to constant action. Ultimately, osteoarthritis will probably develop at this joint ' This type of condition should be treated as soon as possible, because the damage done is most often permanent. Treatment stops the progress of the condition, and regains motion in the spine for improved fluid exchange in and out of the intervertebral disc. The best idea about Intervertebral disc problems is to use a preventive health program, and have your spine and Its associated structures examined periodically to help prevent the condition from developing in the first place. All too often, by the time help is sought for a disc condition, U has already progressed past the point where it could have been reversed and returned to normal. - 525 So. The important thing Is that you understand the mechanics of what happens to the disc in this condition. Rather than having just a bulge on the outer containing ring of the disc, in this condition we have a complete tearing, and the jelly-lisubstance in the center of disc oozes out into the nerve area, encroachon the nerve. The difference between a ing ruptured intervertebral disc and a protruded Intervertebral disc Is similar to the difference between a bulge on tire and a frank blowout of a tire. Once the anulus fibrosus la completely ruptured, surgery Is required. 1297. 3062. NEW STOCK OF K.D. FIR INTERVERTEBRAL and Any questions concerning the project should be referred to the Construction Management Section, Sergeant Behrendt, FROM OUR LUMBER DEPT. This type of disc problem occurs when the outer containing ring of the intervertebral disc, called the anulus fibrosus, becomes bulged and protrudes out, usually into, the area supplied by a nerve. A disc protrusion can develop as the result of an injury, or it can develop sometimes quite easily because of anulus fibrosus weakness due to nutritional deficiency. This type of disc involvement can cause pain in the legs because of irritation on the nerve which goes down the leg, or it can cause severe back pain or neck pain, depending on the location of the buildings on base are slated 1 5 PROTRUDED 12 Individual building custodians will be notified of the start date of each building and no disturbance of activities is expected. The intervertebral disc is a pad, hydraulic in nature, between the vertebrae, or the bones of your spine. The disc works on a hydraulic principle, giving capability of motion between the vertebrae: it also acts as a shock absorber mechanism. In the past, disc problems have been erroneously called "slipped discs", "disc out of place", etc. These terms are incorrect because a disc does not "slip" or "go out of place". There are three basic intervertebral disc involvements. The methods of treatment for these three types of involvements vary, as does the out- - look tor improvement. 31 and physically to do whatever I might want to do in broadcasting." What's the secret of this happiness? For Sergeant Cotton it is an "intense love of music. If people could get together through music most of the problems of the world could be solved." The radio business itself is the object of his desires. "I would like to get into the radio business full blast," he said. There are times, he admits, that he would like to move his bed into the station. "Then if I get up in the night I could go on the air and say what's on my mind," he said.
