Many enlisted people not selected ask: "Why is my evaluation board score less this year than it was last?" Air Force Manpower and Personnel Center officials say three important factors should be considered. First, the board members are different people. Second, the mixture of those competing varies from year to year. Finally, the evaluation environment created by one board cannot be duplicated exactly by the record in a specific Air Force specialty with all others competing in that group. Scores vary, depending on overall characteristics of all records in that specific group. An individual's score may increase each year, but so may a number of others, therefore, board scores may not necessarily be raised. Officials stress that scores only reflect board members' judgments of a record's relative standing on that particular board and is not comparable to scores from other boards. One constant feature of the board evaluation system is each board strives to give every individual competing a fair and equitable assessment in relation to all next. evaluate an individual's Board scores (AFNS) eligibles. Met al recovery underway concerted effort is underway in the Department of Defense to recover precious metals from scrap and surplus material for internal reuse. Precious metals included in the program are gold, silver, platinum and the platinum family of metals. A Air Force activities play a significant role in the precious metals recovery program. Pat Sides, a property disposal specialist in the Air Force Logistics Command logistics operation function, is the Air Force's focal point for the precious metals recovery program. Silver most available metal Silver is the most available because of its films presence in photographic and widely used in military operations. Silver is released into the fixer solution during photographic development process. Recovery techniques applied to the spent photographic chemicals not only provide a quantity of high purity silver, but also serve to reduce pollution in the waterways. Is fl TTTTT a tihiCT T1 According to Jerry Larsen, precious metals monitor, Defense Property Disposal Office, the predominant metal for recovery on this base is silver. The silver is recovered from the hypo solution collected during film developing. Total amount of precious metals recovered by DoD during FY 79 included 1,700,276 troy ounces of silver, 10,368 troy ounces of gold and V, ounces of platinum, Larsen said. At Hill AFB, the recovery program shipped 22,706 pounds of scrap film to be processed for silver recovery and shipped 277 pounds of scrap electronic gear for gold recovery. 3,086 troy Also shipped from the base forsilver recovery was 2,138 pounds of scrap electronic equipment, 3,429 pounds of aircraft wing sections, 1,883 pounds of photographic (sludge) solution and 3,080 pounds of silver bearing batteries, Larsen said. In addition to the equipment and solutions shipped from the base, we shipped 124 pounds of pure silver and AV2 pounds of pure gold. These must be refined to remove some impurities, he said. Under the precious metal recovery program, all items in stock or those entering the inventory will be identified and the national stock number will be coded to show its precious metal content. When that item is no longer usable or required and is transferred to disposal, the precious metal contents can be identified for recovery purposes. Not sold on the open market Recovered metal is not sold on the open market. It is refined, stocked, and issued to satisfy DoD requirements. It can be requisitioned and provided as government furnished material to defense manufacturers for use in products the military services buy, or for internal use. It is available for just the cost of recovery which is less than open market prices. This way the government isn't billed for the recovered precious metals, thus saving tax dollars.
