BARRETT ACCORDING to the laws of the a man who transgressed the marriage law was punished by death. Upon the woman was branded a scarlet letter. It happened upon this occasion that the judges were more lenient with Hester Prynne and permitted her to substitute for the branding the wearing of a scarlet letter of cloth. Arthur Dimmesdale, refusing to confess his crime, felt something not unlike that pang of conscience expressed by Lady Macbeth: "What, wilt these hands ne'er be clean? All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand." WhHe Hester Prynne went to her prison cell with her great secret locked in her heart, the soul of Arthur Dimmesdale was harassed with tortures of an outraged conscience. The day of restitution came. He climbed the pillory end confessed in words that all could hear: "I stand upon the spot where, seven years since I should have Mood. Lo, the scarlet letter which Hester wears but there stood one In the midst of you at whose InWith famy ,vc have not shuddered." a convulsive motion he tore away the band, and the scarlet letter which he had worn In secret was revealed. Now that agriculture is on the upgrade economically, it is well for farmers to keep in mind the necessity of building firm foundations for their business. One of the first stones in that foundation should be freedom from debt. That spells in As soon as the old dependence. debts are wiped out, then it is wise to begin building a reserve to tide over the bad days. It is strange to consider how. few there were who thought of building a reserve during those profitable farm years during the war, and this applied not alone to farmers but to all branches of business. A reserve Is such a fundametally sound piece of business practice, that everyone should have seen that they had one, but few indeed paid any attention to this phase of the matter. Every one was intent with expansion. Farmers cannot look with for tunes in their occupation. If they want to amass a fortune they better get into something else and that But agriculture does very quickly. offer a pleasant life to the man who likes farm life, and is a good place to rear a family. Farmers should not look for getting rich quick schemes but shoud plan to build a substantial structure which will weather the ups and downs of the business cycle. We are approaching a ' period of agriculture expansion if the signs be not misleading, and it is well that farmers move cautiously into this period, for in these stages many mistakes can be made. The outlook appears favorable and we do not mean to discourage enterprise, but we do wish to caution against recklessness. I'tah Farmer.
