A SCRAPBOOKING MOMENT Oprah features Lisa Bearnson of Pleasant Grove by Kristen Partida When the Oprah Winfrey Show contacted Lisa Bearnson, Bearn-son, she couldn't believe it. Producers called Bearnson, Bearn-son, founding editor of "Creating "Cre-ating Keepsakes," after seeing see-ing her profile in People Magazine. "Creating Keepsakes" is a monthly scrapbook magazine maga-zine which gives readers dozens of fresh ideas on how to creatively take pictures and put them together in a scrapbook. Bearnson is also host of a QVC show called "Creating Keepsakes Hour," a spokesperson for Kodak and co-author of three books. Besides her appearance on Oprah, she has been a guest on other TV programs including NBC's Weekend Today Show. Bearnson's appearance on Oprah was June 19. The theme for that day's show was "Ordinary People, With Extraordinary Ideas." Thanks to her successful magazine and talent for scrapbooks, that described Bearnson perfectly. Receiving her first scrap-book scrap-book from her mother at the young age of seven, Bearnson Bearn-son faithfully kept it up to date. She calls that first scrap-book scrap-book her most prized possession. pos-session. "I kept everything in that scrapbook," said Bearnson. Included in that big red scrapbook were pictures, letters and programs. Bearnson said it is tough being a teenager, but at that time in her life her scrap-book scrap-book helped her realize she was a person of great worth. Growing up, Bearnson would look through her scrapbook every night, it got her through some good and bad times. Years later, Bearnson was working as editor-in-chief for Word Perfect Magazine Mag-azine when she first thought of creating a magazine maga-zine which would help people peo-ple make more creative scrapbooks. Soon after Bearnson decided to mesh her publishing pub-lishing background with her passion for scrapbooks and make that dream come true by creating her own magazine. With the designing help of Don Lambson, Creating Keepsakes magazine was a huge success. The first issue of the bimonthly bi-monthly magazine came out in November 1996. The magazine printed 40,000 copies. Bearnson said the response was incredible. Over the past seven years, the magazine has turned into a monthly delivery for approximately half a million mil-lion readers. After the success with her magazine, Bearnson's career took off. She has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows, and been in the nation's top newspapers, newspa-pers, but Bearnson said being on Oprah was the biggest scrapbook moment of her life. Bearnson and her family were on their way to Lake Powell when the show contacted con-tacted her. After the phone call, the family made a quick trip back home to film a segment which would be used to introduce Bearnson and her family to Oprah's audience. After taping the segment, seg-ment, the rest of the family returned to Lake Powell, leaving Lisa behind to get ready for her appearance on Oprah. With less than a week to prepare, Lisa started packing. pack-ing. The day before her appearance she flew into Chicago where she was picked up in a limousine. She met with producers of the show late into the evening. It wasn't until she was on set that she first met Oprah. Bearnson said she wasn't nervous at all during the program. She became emotional emo-tional when the video segment seg-ment introduced her to Oprah viewers. Family, co-workers and friends flew out to support her. While on the show Bearnson shared her secrets to successful scrap-booking. scrap-booking. She said scrapbook beginners should start with their most recent memories and move backwards. Her advice with pictures; keep them in one place and sort them chronologically by child. Don't overwhelm yourself, do a page at a time. If possible, set up a space in your home such as a table or closet dedicated to scrapbooking, that way you won't have to spend a lot of time getting things out or putting them away. Bearnson was very thankful to share scrap-booking scrap-booking with the world. She said you could tell Oprah was clearly touched at the art of scrapbooks because the talk show host almost looked like she was close to tears. "It was surreal," said Bearnson of her Oprah experience. She said Winfrey Win-frey is one of the nicest celebrities she has ever met. Bearnson describes her as generous and caring. car-ing. Bearnson already knows how she is going to scrap-book scrap-book her time on Oprah. She wants to do "The Top 10 of Being On the Oprah Winfrey Win-frey Show." Thanks to her success with her magazine, Bearnson Bearn-son has traveled thousands of miles and met many famous people such as Oprah. Two years ago, she decided decid-ed to sell "Creating Keepsakes" Keep-sakes" to a publisher in New York. Now her main goal is to slow down and spend more time with her husband and children. David Gates to appeai SCERA on Tuesday, July ;a Vio turbulence ot UlllvA wiu 1970s music, one voice rose to the top of the charts with gentle melodies of love and tenderness. It was the sound of David Gates, composer, singer and leader of Bread, a number one group whose songs have sold more than 17 million records. Gates will bring his soft-spoken soft-spoken style and incomparable incompa-rable voice to Utah Tuesday, July 15, at 8 p.m. when he performs at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre, 699 S. State in the middle of Orem's SCERA Park. Popular Popu-lar Utah trumpeters, the Brunson Brothers, will provide pro-vide the front act. Tickets for $18 general admission, $23 . to 25 reserved, are available in advance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at SCERA, 745 S. State, Orem, or by calling 225-2569 or 225-ARTS, 225-ARTS, or at the Shell gate one hour prior to the concert. con-cert. Seating is on a sloped grassy hill, so patrons may bring blankets or rent a chair for $1. Gates has often been called the voice of sweet reason, and it doesn't take more than a perusal of his hits to see why. Gates' music contains some of the most memorable contemporary contempo-rary romance music written. writ-ten. "Everything I Own," "Make It With You," "If," "Baby, I'm-a Want You," "Guitar Man," "Lost Without With-out Your Love," "Sweet Surrender," Sur-render," "It Don't Matter to Me," "Diary," "Aubrey" and "Goodbye Girl" are a few of his signature songs. In an industry where talent tal-ent alone is often not enough to make a successful success-ful living, Gates came to the business better prepared than most entertainers. As the son of a band director and piano teacher, Gates was surrounded by the classical clas-sical music of his parents. He was performing before age five, and was proficient in many instruments by high school. Although he had been encouraged musically by his father, his dad was skeptical skep-tical of his son's future.
