Show i New Utah! - Wednesday, March 1, 2000 - Page 10 Associated Food Stores to celebrate 60th anniversary at Kohler's, Allen's On March 1, Associated Food Stores will observe their 60th anniversary. Two area grocery stores, Kohler's and Allen's, as members of Associated, will mark the event with anniversary activities, all under the theme of "Associated Food Stores same old-fashioned service, now 500 members strong. My how time flies...." Associated's CEO Rich Parkinson said, "We have great things coming that we can look forward to in the future, but the real backbone the real heart and soul of our organization are store owners like Doyle Kohler and Steve Allen who are in the communities providing the best products and customer service ser-vice for our customers." Sixty years ago, 34 independent indepen-dent grocers bound together to form a small wholesale cooperative. coopera-tive. They needed the buying power of a united group to survive sur-vive the increasing monopoly of retail chains. To commemorate the loyalty of these innovative grocers, the 500 current members of Associated Food Stores celebrates cele-brates 60 years of success as independents. Kohler's opened in Lehi on Sept. 1, 1969. Owner Doyle Kohler moved the store in March of 1983 to a new location twice the size of the original. On June 24, 1994, an additional Kohler's was built in Highland. Kohler first started in the grocery gro-cery business in 1957 as a meat cutter for Safeway. He is current ly on Associated's Board of Directors. The Highland store is scheduled sched-uled for a remodel this summer. The store will get 17,000 more square feet and allow Kohler's to expand all departments, doubling dou-bling the size of the store. It should be finished by the first of August. Aliens has been in Utah County since 1944. The Orem store was built in 1983, joining its sister stores in Provo and Springville. The stores have been members of Associated since 1985. Associated Food Stores is an independent grocery co-op located in Salt Lake City. Associated can be found on the Internet at www.afstores.com.
