'i The 58 - 56 nail-biter was the perfect way to end a crazy region schedule with both teams hoping for the victory that would break the four way tie between the Vikings, Devils, American Fork and Spanish Fork. Sp'ringville appeared well prepared for Pleasant Grove as they opened the game with a 7 - 4 lead before Nate Anderson ?r "- ill " -.rx ! r: .... - - v ; - Photos by Todd Veenker Pleasant Grove's speedy swing man Scott Mark goes airborne to;deliver the ball at Springville Feb. 22. The Devils responded with a scoring run of their own in the final two minutes of play in the first quarter to take a 15 - 13 advantage into the second quarter. Justin Shepherd provided the hot hand for the Vikings in the second quarter as he scored six of Pleasant Grove's 11 points in the quarter. Shepherd would finish the night as the Viking's leading scorer with 16 points. Shepherd has been the most consistent scorer this season, so it was only fitting that he would end the regular season as the leading scorer for the game. Pleasant Grove did, however, fall behind by five points prior to the half after taking a short 20 - 18 lead midway through the quarter. The Springville lead would have been only two at the break without a buzzer-beater buzzer-beater three point shot by the Devils. The Vikings opened with the momentum in the second half as Pleasant Grove went on a 12 - 5 run to capture a 35 - 34 lead in the third quarter. Springville would not find a way to retake the lead until the final minutes of the game. Scott Mark had the hot and in the third ' quarter for Pleasant Grove as he scored five of his game total nine points during the period. Nate Anderson also contributed yet another three point basket as he would finish the evening with nine points. In the final eight minutes of play, the Vikings appeared ready to blow open the close game, when Springville fell behind 51 - 45. But the untimely untime-ly fifth foul of Erek Bond with three minutes remaining gave the Devils new life. Springville went on a 9 - 2 run over a two minute period to recapture the lead at 54 - 53 with only 1:36 remaining on the clock. Pleasant Grove appeared tired and out of gas as the Devils were able to get several second chance baskets thanks to offensive rebounds. That's when Nate Anderson stepped up and hit the biggest shot of his career with only 46 seconds remaining. Facing two defenders at the top of the key, Anderson turned and shot at the basket from 20 feet away. The ball hit nothing but net and all of a sudden Pleasant Grove was back in front with a 56 - 54 lead. A couple of missed free throws gave Springville one last chance at the victory, but an open three point shot at the buzzer just missed its mark and the Pleasant Grove celebration cele-bration began on the Devil's court. With the celebration came the news that American Fork and Spanish Fork had both lost, giving the Vikings the outright out-right fifth and final spot in the state tournament. Ironically the prize for victory victo-ry was a second chance at upsetting the Olympus Titans. Last year the Vikings rolled into Ogden and stunned the Titans in the first round when it appeared as though Olympus could very easily have won the state championship. Since that game last February, a small rivalry has begun between these two schools. During the football season, Pleasant Grove traveled trav-eled to Olympus and beat the Titans in a mild upset on the gridiron. Unfortunately for Pleasant Grove, the Titans will not be surprised this season. If the Vikings are to pull of the victory, victo-ry, it will be from perfect defense against the three point shot and because the Pleasant Grove big men play well against an average sized Titan front court. Results of last night's game were not available prior to press time, but if Pleasant Grove managed a victory, they will advanced to the round of eight on Thursday afternoon at Weber State.
