According to national survey results from the Food Research and Action Center, Utah has seen a 5.1 percent increase in the number of schools participating partici-pating in the School Breakfast Program from 1998 to 1999. At 484 schools, Utah ranks 11th nationally. Utah has also seen an increase in the number of students stu-dents qualifying for free or reduced-price breakfasts participating par-ticipating in the School Breakfast Program. Eight-four percent of students participating participat-ing in the School Breakfast Program are needy, which is a 3.6 percent increase from 1998 to 1999. Utah ranks 15th nationally. In 1999, approximately 28,055 students consumed more than 5 million breakfasts at an average cost of 77 cents per breakfast. Students qualifying quali-fying for a reduced price paid only 30 cents. Research shows that students stu-dents who eat breakfast at school perform better in school, have few disciplinary problems, are absent less, have an increased attention span, and are more likely to obtain nutrients nutri-ents necessary for growth and development.
