According to Mr. Hutchinson, plans for a high school swim team were cancelled this year due to administration changes at American Fork High and at Alpine School District However, he is Steve King wins region championship by DEAN VON MEMMOTT An American Fork Caveman won a region wrestling championship in the Region Seven Tournament at Uintah in Vernal Saturday. Steve King won the title when he whipped Mountain View's Todd Sorenson 14-6 in the heavyweight division. "I expected King to take it," Caveman Coach Tim Pontious said. King was the only Caveman to make it to the championship finals. Pontious said American Fork did good in the quarterfinals, but ran into trouble in the semifinals. With King as the only survivor in the semifinals, the rest of the Cavemen had to fight hard in the consolation bracket in order to keep their hopes of going to state alive. Two Cavemen won in that bracket. Rick Bartholomew rolled all over Timpview's James Larsen 12-7 to take third in the 105-pound division. Andy Roberts, the other American Forker, edged Gary Roylance of Timpview 7-4 to clinch the third-place spot in the 138-pound division Even though he was beaten 5-2 by Uintah Ute David Gurr in the consolation championship, Darren Conder still earned a trip to the state tournament, which is going to be hetd at Weber State College in Ogden this week. Pontious said he was disappointed that two of his other best wrestlers did not place in the tournament, Gerald Kitchen and Kevin Wilkenson. In spite of that disappointment, disap-pointment, Pontious will be taking four wrestlers with him to Weber State to fight for American Fork's honor. Uintah, as expected, took the region crown while American Fork placed fifth in the six-team tourney in Vernal. confident that next year it may be possible for him to form one of the best swimming teams in the state. "For about six months last year I was told that we would form a high school swimming team but then plans were cancelled," says Coach Hutchinson. Now next year is his goal to form a swimming team program similar to other programs in the district "I can sec a lot of students who have a natural talent for swimming. If I amid recruit them I'm sure we could easily take our team to compete for state honors," he said. Coach Hutchinson also stated that many of the students with superior swimming abilities are reluctant to put forth the effort of two hours a day in the px)l for 1 1 months. "If I could get these students to commit themselves to the team the biggest problem would be solved," he said. He sincerely hopes that the students will come forward to involve themselves in the effort. In addition to teaching at American Fork Junior High, Mr. Hutchinson also coaches the United States Swimming Association team that meets at the junior high pool.
