Principal Douglas E. Nicholes noted in 1886, the children in France helped by donations to b ring the Statue to the United States. Then school children in the United States helped to build the base for the Statue by their donations. Again, in 1936, school children helped with donations when a major renovition was completed on it. "We thought it would be nice to have our students say they had helped with (he current renovation," Principal Nicholes said. As a result, the youngsters are gathering cans for recycling, with money going to the renovation project. "This way the children also see for themselves how people litter, and are conscious of recycling," he said.
