Crandall, an Knulish teacher at American Fork Junior llijih School, was one of 15 hitfh school and junior high school humanities teachers from 1 1 states who spent six weeks this summer intensively studying three of the great epic poems of the Western civilization: "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" by the Creek poet Homer and "The Aenid" by the Roman poet Vergil. Chosen from 1(K) applicants to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar, the high school teachers came toi the University of Texas at Austin to enrich their own humanities backgrounds. By so doing, they hoped to enhance their ability to impart a better understanding of the humanities when they return to face their students in the fall. Of the 15 NEH seminars conducted this summer for high school teachers, UT's was the only one devoted to epic Green and Roman poetry. Leading the study was Dr. Karl Galinsky, chairman of the UT Classics Department, the eighth-ranked eighth-ranked department of its kind in the U.S. Dr. Galinsky said he is hopeful that by immersing themselves in the legends of such heroes as Achilles, Odysseus and Aeneas the teachers will have gained new insight into literary strategy and poetic composition, values or conflict of values the epics represent, their view of man, their reflection of Greek and Roman culture, and the reasons why such epics have appealed through the ages. 1983 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Continuous Entertainment at the Entertainment Tent.
