On Thursday, the Cavemen blanked the Mountain View Bruins 20. Saturday, American Fork beat the Judge Memorial Bulldogs 2-1. The Swvanen b winning streak in the tournament was snapped by the tfixuan Dwnaiggere, wno won 2-1 Monday evening. Looking back on American Fork's win over the sole team to beat it in region play, Caveman Coach Larry DeMerritt said the Bruins were tired after having won a double overtime thriller over Murray. He cited one sign of the exhaustion: Their midfielders were dragging." Because of their tiredness, DeMerritt said, the Bruins weren't able to move effectively. ; Though the Cavemen were fresh and ready for the game, DeMerritt said, "Our passing was rusty, but we kept up the pressure on them." Despite rusty passing, the coach said, "We had good Bupport on defense." Indeed, there was tremendous support of American Fork's defense. Caveman goalie Randy Healy made a very heavy contribution to it During most of the second half, for example, the Bruins kept the ball deep in Caveman territory, causing Healy much headache. He checked two good Bruin shots during that time. Those two shots, Marck "O Cavalo" Aith Baid, were the most frightening moments in the game for American Fork, " Caveman Scott Nielsen scored American Fork's first goal early in the first half. However, brilliant defensive plays by Bruins, such as Vaughn Wighonghi, Curtis Fielding, and goalie Steve Conlee kept the Cavemen from chalking up additional goals in the half. In the next half, Conlec spent most of the time watching his team putting the heat on American Fork's defense. But when the momentum shifted to American Fork, the Bruin goalie began experiencing as much pressure as Healy. illllllillllllllliiliB : 'J I , ": . r A''' 1 T i - ' ' -' ; V t; - - ' : v !& - " ' 1 Y' J i ? Teammate Marcio "O Cavalo" Aith (12) looks on while the ball zips toward him. During the game's last minutes, the Bruins just couldn't keep the ball out of their territory for very long. Caveman aces, such as Robert Edwards and Sean Orton, kept dribbling the ball deep into Mountain View territory. About 10 minutes before the whistle, Caveman Robert Simmons scored his team's second goal. American Fork came really close to scoring other goals soon afterwards, but Conlee had become an awesome barrier for thorn. In Saturday's game, the Cavemen, though minus one man in the second half, were able to give the Bulldogs a tough battle all the way through. "Our speed and ability enabled us to score," DeMerritt said. He added that the Cavemen passed well and gave one another strong support "The boys didn't make very many mistakes," the coach said. He said the only problem American Fork had in its performance was that its players clustered around the ball from time to time. The Cavemen's battle against the Bulldogs was tough from the beginning. Making the opening kickoff. Judge drove deep into American Fork's backfield. The Cavemen answered the drive with a stiff defense. Brilliant plays, such as Hate Puriri'8 headball, kept the Bulldogs from scoring in the attack. Judge suddenly lost the ball, and Simmons ran into Judge territory, where he received a pass, starting one of the most critical attacks of the game. The attack resulted in a goal by Nielsen. The Bulldogs didn't let that goal shake them up one bit They put up really tough defense that kept American Fork from scoring anymore goals in the half. One example of Judge's magnificent defense was Bulldog Kevin Foley's kicking the ball out of Aith's possession. Early in the second half, Simmons ran into Judge goalie Mike Pelley while trying to beat him to the ball. Believing the Caveman intentionally hurt the Bulldog, a bearded referee whipped out a red card, which meant Simmons was ejected from the game. The ejection drew angry protests from American Fork. The protests, however, could not get the referee to change his mind. Recalling the ejection, DeMerritt said, "We played with extra effort after we got the raw end of the deal." Under soccer rules, a player thrown out of the game cannot be replaced. So that meant American Fork was stuck with playing only 10 men. Soon after the ejection, two players came close to getting tossed out of the game for exchanging very harsh words, Caveman Gary Nunley and Bulldog John listen. However, the bearded referee just gave them a warning. The incident showed how intense the duel had become after Foley scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at one. Receiving a pass from Edwards late in the half, Nielsen broke the tie, sewing up American Fork's win. DeMerritt said that in the first half of the Jordan game, the Cavemen lacked enthusiasm, thereby allowing the Beetdiggers to beat them to the ball. "We should have come out faster and sooner in the game," the coach said. An omen of American Fork's defeat was given in the middle of the first half when Beetdigger Darrel Van amen booted the ball into American Fork's penalty area on a comer kick. The Cavemen tried getting the ball out of then-penalty then-penalty box, but Beetdigger Robert Bruce managed to score a goal. Cavemen like Edwards had a lot of near misses at tying the score during the half. They did, though, manage to keep the Beetdiggers from scoring anymore goals in the round. In the second half, American Fork was cited for handball in the penalty box. The citation enabled Craig Adolphson to score on a penalty kick. Aith saved American Fork from a shutout late in the half with a high shot After Aith's goal, the Cavemen placed heavy presure on Jordan, but could not tie the game at two. American Fork has lost its hopes for a state crown. But because the tournament is a double-elimination one, DeMerritt said, "We're not dead yet; we're coming back."
