Show I Thursday, May 24, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 5 notes NEWS AND IDEAS MOUNTAIN VIEW COMMENCEMENT Mountain View High School graduates Hannah Bates left Jacob Glenn center and Annelise Kelly Bruin trio to address Ciass.of 2007 at Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAFF At the home of the Mighty Bruins, the question each spring isn't so much 'who is speaking at graduation?,' but rather 'who wants to speak at graduation?' Instead of having student government officers or a valedictorian or salutatorian address graduates and their families at commencement, it's a tradition at Mountain View High School that the eight seniors with the top weighted overall GPAs "try out" to be student speakers, said school counselor and graduation coordinator coor-dinator Tim Blatter. Approximately 390 seniors are expected to don their maroon ma-roon gowns and gold-tassled caps during the school's commencement com-mencement exercises slated for Wednesday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. , he said. The students pen their own speeches based off the graduating graduat-ing class's theme (this year its the Rhonda Ktcock quote "We may not have it altogether, but together we have it all") and BRAYDEN SANTO How many days left, Bruins? Bru-ins? On my calendar it's about four more school days about a week total. Then school is out. Forever. This year's winners volunteers volun-teers were academic standouts Hannah Bates, Jacob Glenn, and Annelise Kelly who also happened to be Mountain View's Sterling Scholar nominees nomi-nees in music, social sciences and mathematics, respectively. "They're from the top eight in the school and they just happen hap-pen to be three of our Sterling Scholars," Blatter said. Carol Wilson, Mountain View's scholarship secretary, said 85 seniors have secured college scholarships totaling $700,000 and nearly 55 percent of graduates planned to attend college. , Blatter said Mountain View's Class of 2007 has nearly 20 students who have earned or will complete their associate's degrees this summer. "It's the most in the past 5 to 7 years," he said. "It's really a very good academic class for us. It's a neat thing." The competition wasn't cutthroat, cut-throat, Glenn said, but rather he and Bates friends since the first grade helped each Well, not really, but I'd like to think that. There really isn't much to report about with school being be-ing over. AP tests have been taken, CRTs are finished, But we still have finals. No one likes them. On the other hand, tomorrow tomor-row we get our yearbooks. That'll be fun. Next week, there's no school on Monday, Tuesday is the senior day to Lagoon. "I just had another friend look over it today." Kelly felt addressing her classmates at graduation would be a good experience and fun. "I'll be focusing on unity and how people working together can create something wonderful," wonder-ful," she said. Glenn calls his three years at Mountain View a mostly positive posi-tive experience during which time he's had great teachers, enjoyed a good learning atmosphere at-mosphere and made life-long acquaintances. His most memorable moment mo-ment as a Bruin senior was competing in the Mr. Mountain View pageant "because it was so opposite of me," Glenn said. "Being up there, paraded around in a tuxedo, being asked questions that was interesting," he said. Kelly agreed Mountain View is a great place to get an education edu-cation because of the talented faculty and strong student spirit and camaraderie. "I've been in the choir and is awesome. It'll be the best assembly you've been to this year ...) After that is the graduation ceremony and senior all-night party, and then its over, till next year that is. In other news, I finally put my two weeks notice in for work. I decided that as much as I love my job at OfficeMax, it'll be too hard to juggle a "regular part-time schedule" during the summer.
