I a MVHS BRINGS HOME NATIONAL TITLES Continued from front page "For the second time in three years, we're proud to name the Mountain View boys cross country coun-try team national champions," Lawlor said. The award, which is given by USA Today and Harrier Magazine, has also been won three times by the Mountain View girls program. "In a perfect world, we'd all run cross country for Mountain View,"Lawlor said. Speaking of perfect, the boys team went 14-0 in dual meets, won its eighth straight Region 3 title and its fifth state championship in October. It was Houle's 50th state title overall. The varsity team, made up of seniors Chandler Goodwin, Dustin Bybee and Dirk Black, junior jun-ior Kyle Cramer, sophomores Nate Houle and Mike Steele, and freshman Steve Strickland, really earned the big gold trophy in September Sep-tember by winning the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, N.C. Mountain View won the event by a whopping 30 points, virtually assuring itself the national title. For the girls basketball team, the whole process pro-cess of earning national attention actually started nearly eight years ago, when Mountain View traveled trav-eled to a preseason tournament in Brea, Calif. "They hadn't been beaten on their home floor in like eight years," I loulo said. 'To show you what they thought of us, we played them in the first game of the tournament. We beat them by 13 points. For the last five years, Mountain View has competed in the Nike Tournament of Cham pions, proving with every outing it could play with any team in the country. Senior Danielle Cheesman, who learned Thursday Thurs-day she was the first Utah girls basketball player to be named a USA Today first-team Ail-American since Taylorsville's Natalie Williams in 1988, credited those Mountain View teams that preceded pre-ceded this one. "The teams from past years, they started it," Cheesman said. "They started the tradition. This national championship isn't just Congratulation 1360 South State ours. They let us know what kind of players we had to be." Players like Raegan Scott, Liz Pinegar, Lori, Karrie and Kim Henry, Heather Cheesman, Erin Thorn, Lisa Osguthorpe, Erin Hansen and dozens of others helped Mountain View "and the whole state of Utah" get recognized for playing strong girls basketball. "We've had to go on the road," Houle said. "Each year we'd come back to the Tournament Tourna-ment of Champions we'd get a better seed. It's been a long journey. jour-ney. A few years ago (with current BYU standouts Thorn, Osguthorpe and Heather Cheesman) we were a free throw away from winning the title. We just had to keep coming back and getting better.""Flanked by this year's Mountain View varsity team, Houle accepted the national championship trophy and congratulations con-gratulations from ESPN, Nike, the directors of the Tournament of Champions, Orem Mayor Jerry Washburn and Alpine School Board president JoDe Sundberg. Last week, ESPN took the top four teams in its poll and factored in strength of schedule. "Depth is another factor," Houle said. "And then they look at whether or not you have legitimate Division I players on your team. But the final fi-nal decision came down to strength of schedule. We played three top-10 teams at the tournament tourna-ment in Chicago, and we lost to Narbonne (Calif. I, which is No. 1 in the USA Today poll." Mountain View (24-1) finished second to Narbonne in the USA Today poll. "We sat here in November and watched the boys cross country team win the national title," sophomore Heather Hansen said. "We wanted to come out and prove ourselves. We knew we could do it." Houle, who has won six national titles, 51 state championships cham-pionships and been inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame, still gets a charge out of finishing fin-ishing on top. "This never gets old," Houle said. "If it did, I'd probably go do something else." Darnell Dickson the prep sports editor for The Daily Herald. Her-ald. Street, Orem nil ?
