OHS Precision Drill Team captures national championship BY REVA BOWEN Times Reporter A dedicated group of dancers, danc-ers, the 14-member Orem High School Precision Drill Team, brought a national championship champion-ship trophy home in April of 2001 to adorn the school's tro phy case. The drill team flew out together to-gether April 5 to compete in the United Spirit Association Nationals Nation-als at Cal State in Long Beach, and returned home a few days later with the championship, placing plac-ing first in their division in the officers (five-girl team), lyrical, and military categories, as well as fifth and seventh in two other categories. cat-egories. Teams from throughout the United States participated in the competition, with 30-40 teams vying in each of six different areas. ar-eas. Judging was done on the basis ba-sis of choreography, execution, showmanship, and appearance. Members of the 2000-2001 team are: Alex Anderson, Brittany Brit-tany Anderson, Amber Chynoweth, Chelsea Chynoweth, Abby Gedicks, Emily Hayes, Nicole Hill, Kelsey Jones, Jen McClellan, Audra Mott, Nicole Nielson, Julia Ricks, Erikka Robinson, and Suzanne Sabey. Drill team advisor is Nesha Woodhouse, assisted by Tiffany Tif-fany Ericksen and Ashley Bott. A "I I ? - - 1 1 MVHS BRINGS HOME TWO NATIONAL TITLES BY DARNELL DICKSON : Th9 Daily Herald OREM - The Mountain View girls basketball team may have won the national championship this year, but it took nearly a decade to earn it. The official announcement came March 22 in a phone call from ESPN.com prep sports editor Jeff Goodman, just one week after Mountain View dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the next-to-last poll of the season. Finally, Mountain View's national championship dreams came true. "We just want to let everyone know that we've chosen Mountain View as the No. 1 team in our final poll," Goodman said, and the Mountain View fans that filled the school's gym broke into wild applause. "We're honored," Mountain View coach Dave Houle said. "We want the whole student body to share this with us. Winning Win-ning it this year is a dream come true." And not just for Houle, who will be featured in USA Today as the only high school coach in history to win two national championships in one year. The Mountain View boys won the cross country title last December. Houle, who is also the schools' cross country coach, took a phone call from USA Today prep editor Chris Lawlor.
