Sign zone change okayed The Orem City Council voted unanimously April 22 to approve ap-prove a sign zone change that will allow a 7-11 store to upgrade an existing sign. Application for the change was made by Gillies Signs, agent for the 7-11 store at 1196 West Center Street in Orem. The existing ex-isting sign was a legal, non-conforming one under city council revisions to the sign ordinance that were passed in 1994. Changing the sign zone from "D" to "E" made it possible for the business to replace the freestanding frees-tanding pole sign and maintain its sign visibility from 1-15. Young DanceWIakers to perform at BYU Brigham Young University's Young Dancemakers will perform per-form "At the Edge of magic" during the annual "Evening of Dance" performances May 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets at $5 for students, faculty, staff, and children and $6 for the general public are available at the Harris Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801)-378-HFAC. Sponsored by the BYU Children's Creative Dance program, pro-gram, this year's performance will feature nine dances that explore ex-plore common fears often expressed ex-pressed by young children-fears of shadows, thunder and lightning, lightn-ing, being alone, and giants-and will lead spectators to see that by facing their fears they can understand more about the world and themselves, according accord-ing to director Christine Oller-ton. Oller-ton. A storyteller figure will guide audiences through the visions of imagination through narration, song, audience involvement invol-vement and dance. Comprised of some of the most advanced dancers in the Children's Creative Dance program, pro-gram, Young DanceMakers will perform pieces wuh choreography choreog-raphy greatly influenced by the students themselves, whose ages range from 4 to 18. The Children's Creative Dance program was started in the early 1950s by Virginia Tanner Tan-ner and became associated with BYU in the mid 1960s through he efforts of current BYU Dance Department chair Sara Lee Gibb. For the past 25 years, the director has been Christine 01- 1 lerton. Children's Creative Dance is a modern, expressive dance program. pro-gram. The teachers greatly emphasize em-phasize creativity and promote using the part of the brain that stimulates imagination and originality, Ollerton said. Children in the program move and interact constantly, allowing allow-ing them to build self-confidence and overcome fear or shyness of personal expression.
