A bust in the mining boom had the small community on the financial finan-cial ropes. Unemployment was high and jobs were scarce. Few could see much of a silver lining on the area's cloudy horizon. Then a very subtle shift in America's recreational habits began to revive the economy of the town. Mountain biking became be-came popular, jeep safaris wound their way over the rolling sandstone of Canyonlands like never before. Hollywood advertised adver-tised Utah's spectacular redrock scenery in movies like "City Slickers", "Indiana Jones", and "Thelma and Louise". The influx of tourism breathed new life into the area and today Moab serves as a hub to recreation in southeastern Utah. Mountain Biking In mountain biking circles, Moab is the geographic center of the universe. Thousands of people ranging from pre-teens to adults ride the trails each year. In October, cyclists around the country make an annual pilgrimage to the area for a weekend of fun on the petrified dunes that surround the area. During a business trip to the east coast, a cyclist with a heavy New Yawk accent asked me if I'd 90 miles of exciting river rafting makes five days on the Green River a fabulous family vacation. Moab's Slickrock Trail is a popular attraction in the area and once you ride it you understand under-stand why. Located just east of town, the trail was originally pioneered by the Bureau of Land Management for the motorcycle crowd. Yet for one reason or another, it never really caught on. When mountain bikers discovered dis-covered the trail, it became famous overnight The route follows a rolling, circular path over miles and miles of sandstone and offers everything from simple rides for children to technical challenges for expert cyclists. The path is clearly marked and riders that pedal its entire circuit are treated with panoramas of the Colorado River, deep canyons, and spectacular overlooks. You can ride the trail in two hours or make a day of it. Either way, youll want to check out other rides in the area as the trail does see a lot of use. Over eons of time, wind, weather, and erosion carved the landscape of Arches National Park into a landscape unlike any other. While you can catch glimpses of Arches from your car, you've got to walk under the Southern Utah sunshine to gain a true appreciation for the land's beauty. There are trails suited to the fitness level of most every adventurer. The Park Avenue trail is a great introduction to the park. As you wander the canyon floor, giant sandstone fins tower over head. If there has been rain in the last few days, watch for natural water-filled pockets called potholes. Another popular area is The Windows. An easy loop trail leads to the North and South Windows as well as Turret Arch. This area offers spectacular scenery, so don't forget your camera. The Sand Dune Arch trail is a fun and cool diversion for adults and children alike. A short (210 mile) hike leads to a small arch and a giant sand dune. The area sits in a narrow canyon and spends much of the day in shade. You can obtain additional information in-formation on trails and ac tivities at the Visitors Center near the park entrance.
