Show Wednesday, May 10, 1989 OrenvGeneva Times Page 4 Region Two baseball Cavemen By Cathe Owens Orem went through four pitchers and two catchers Monday, Mon-day, struggling with injuries and errors, and ended up losing the third round consolation baseball game to the American Fork Cavemen 11-6. In earlier tournament action last Friday, Orem shut out Mountain Moun-tain View 10-0, after falling to West Jordan 7-6 in opening round action. Hillcrest sent Mountain View into consolation play Thursday in a 16-0, five inning blast. CAVEMEN 11, TIGERS 6 When it rains it pours at Orem High, and injuries seemed to be on the order this season. At the Tigers' final game in the Region Two tournament the coach hobbled hob-bled across the field with a cast and crutches, the starting catcher, Todd Williams, lounged with the spectators nursing a knee that just went through surgery, and substitute catcher, sophomore Ryan Tyson was taken to the hospital after being hit in the neck with a ball during warm-ups. With Bryan Rowley filling in at catch the game went on, but trouble on the mound, combined with American Fork's pitching strength, ended up giving the Cavemen the win. Devereaux recorded 11 strike outs in the game. The Tigers went through four pitchers, and suffered from five errors as the American Fork team made its way to the 11-6 win. The Cavemen held a 4-0 lead going into the fourth inning, but Orem held on, loading the bases with a Dave Jasper single, and bunts from Craig Cook and Chuck Woodhouse. After Devereaux fanned two Orem batters and had two strikes on Derrick Louder, Louder cleared the bases with a 3RBI triple to right field. The runs put Orem within one, 4-3, but the Cavemen answered with five runs that inning to put the game out of reach. The Tigers added two runs in the sixth when two American Fork errors sent Steve Mackay and Eric Boyer home. Craig Cook singled in the sixth and moved around the bases, scoring the final run on a Mackay single. Both Cook and Chuck Woodhouse Wood-house went 2-for-4 from the plate, while Louder recorded the only extra-base hit, hit 3RBI triple. TIGERS 10, BRUINS 0 Bryan Rowley started Orem off with a first-inning homer that seemed to take the wind out of Mountain View's sails Friday. The Tigers swept the game with a 10-hit performance. "Bryan had a great game," said Orem coach Terry Harward. Rowley went 3-for-3 from the plate with a home run, a double and a single to lead the Tigers offensively. But the key to the game, according to Harward, was the battery. Orem's stand-out catcher Todd Williams twisted his knee early in the game, and sophomore Ryan Tyson came in to catch for Cade Schaerrer on the mound. "Cade and Tyson were outstanding," he said, "That's the difference right there." Orem shut the Bruins out, and the game was called in the sixth inning on the 10-run rule. Bruin kickers secure state tournament berth with tie, win last week A 2-2 tie with Alta moved Mountain View into a sure spot for state tournament play in region soccer action last Tuesday, then a 2-0 win at West Jordan moved the Bruins up to a 7-4-2 record. Orem recorded two wins, 6-2 against West Jordan and 2-1 against American Fork, but even with the two, they are short of a state tournament berth. They wrapped up their season yesterday yester-day against Brighton. BRUINS 2, JAGUARS 0 Mountain View suffered with injuries Thursday against West Jordan. Leading scorer Ben Cahoon was out with a concussion concus-sion from Tuesday's game, then Loftin Graham, Kent LeMaster and Randy Mangum left the match with injuries. West Jordan answered with two more to take the lead, then held the Tigers scoreless in the seventh. The loss sent Orem into consolation region tournament Pl HUSKIES 16, BRUINS 0 Hillcrest bombarded the Bruin mound Thursday, blasting 14 hits against all three Mountain Moun-tain View pitchers. The Bruins kept the game close for the first two-and-a-half innings, keeping the Huskies down to a 3-0 lead, but the Hillcrest batters turned the goal. They slipped through only once, just into the second half when Shaun Sampson knocked a loose ball in to tie the score at 1-1. Inouye scored the go-ahead goal when the Caveman keeper was out of position, to claim the 2-1 win. The game gave the Tigers a 6-6-1 record with the final game remaining. BRUINS 2, HAWKS 2 Alta went ahead 2-1 just before half-time last Tuesday, and Mountain View spent the second half firing shots at Hawk goalkeeper John Ragsdale who batted away all but one shot. With 1:41 on the clock Mountain Moun-tain View's leading scorer, Ben Cahoon took the ball, touched it i into a opening, and shot it into the ' left side of the net to tie the score at 2-2.
