Steel, local orthopaedic surgeon, will visit the People's Republic of China this June as part of an American delegation of 21 orthopaedic surgeons at the Invitation of the Chinese Medical Association. The three week visit is being organized by the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International, founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The American team will represent the various aspects of orthopaedic surgery in professional exchanges with their Chinese counterparts. The Chinese Medical Assocation is a national scientific organization responsible for nongovernmental exchanges between the People's Republic of China and foreign medical professionals. It provides leadership for forty medical societies in China. Sponsorship of this delegation by the Chinese Medical Assocation reflects the keen interests of the Chinese in expanding their knowledge of current Western research and applications in orthopaedic surgery. It also ensures that the highest possible level of scientific, professional and cultural exchange will take place. The team will spend three weeks visiting major hospitals and institutions in the capital city of Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. They will discuss topics of mutual interest with their Chinese colleagues. Their respective countires, with particular emphasis on musculoskeletal diseases and their rehabilitation. They will exchange ideas about triage and the treatment of trauma victims, as well as their rehabilitation.
