True, youth can learn about farming and cooking, but there is also much more. It is hard to put a dollar value on youth programs since one of their goals is to raise more responsible, productive adults. However, you can make some estimates of the immediate dollar . contributions Utah families gain from 4-H programs. For instance: Survey indicates that a vegetable garden can save a family an average of $250 in food bills per year. In 1985, 1,947 Utah Youth enrolled in 4-H gardening programs. This could add up to nearly $486,000 saved statewide. The 1,801 4-Hers enrolled in the Child Care project in 1985 not only learned how to take better care of their siblings, but made themselves more employable as babysitters. In 1985, camping programs provided through 4-H allowed approximately 3,000 youths to experience the great outdoors at a cut rate price. A $5 registration fee was their only cost. A conservative estimate for a similar family camping trip would be about $50 per child. Four-H programs also taught approximately 250 youth auto and small engine maintenance in 1985. Probably the most drastic statistic concerning the economic impact of 4-H programs is the total amount of instruction available to youth. Similar to other youth programs, 4-H relies heavily on volunteer instructors to keep its programs going. If you paid these volunteers just $3 per hour, their contributions would come to approximately $4 million during 1985. Program Changes Enhance Computer Course At UTC A name change, a new articulation agreement and a new arrangement with Weber State .College are changes recently announced by the Data Processing Department at Utah Technical College at ProvoOrem. Computer Information Systems is the new name, reflecting the type of work graduates will be called on to perform, according to Annette Thomason, department chairperson. "Students may choose one of three emphases in the department, business, programming or computer science," Thomason said. "Each will follow the core and then add specialty courses leading to an Associate in Applied Science degree. " The business courses will be service related, with the programmer area doing extensive writing in a variety of languages and the computer science area dealing with technical research. "The changes will give students a wider range of options in the computer area," Thomason said. An articulation agreement, allowing students to transfer certain courses from UTC to a four-year school, has been worked out with Brigham Young University. "Students at UTC will be able to take seven fundamental courses from UTC that BYU requires for acceptance into their computer science program," according to Thomason. Following the lead of other programs offered at the College, Weber State will offer courses leading to a bachelor's degree through the Computer Information Services Department. "Students will be able to get their degree from Weber State but attend classes at UTC," Thomason said. "The first courses are scheduled to beginnextFall quarter. Those wanting more information about the programs offered through Computer Information Services should call 226-5000, ext. 408. Pretty Garden Markers Dear Kristine: My son discovered a neat way to display the seed packages at the end of the rows in our vegetable garden. W ave the empty seed packages through the tines of a plastic fork and stick the fork in the ground. The packages stay secure and I don't waste time hunting for the right size sticks to secure the packages. Also, the garden looks neatand uniform. Becky Lewis S.L.C.Utah Thanks for the tip, Becky. It is that time of year for planting gardents. This is an excellent time to get the children involved in some worthwhile work and responsibility. Pet and Pest Control Dear Kristine: My children have pet rabbits. During the summer the kids like to let the rabbits loose in the yard to play and eat the grass. The problem is that the rabbits eat more than grass, such as flowers and garden vegetables. My solution was to sprinkle a little red pepper powder on the plants that I didn't want eaten. This not only discourages our rabbits Among the new art donations at BYU are four original works by Grandma Moses, the popular American primitive painter who began her career at age 78. BYU also recently received works by Alexander Calder and Lewis Ramsey. Donations Add To BYU Permanent Art Works Brigham Young University's substantial art collection has been enhanced with several recent donations, dona-tions, including four works by Mary R. (Grandma) Moses. "The newest acquisitions add to the depth of our collections," says Virgie Day, museum specialist and art collection manager in the College of Fine Arts and Communications. "For instance, we already had one Grandma Moses and now we have five. With most of our major artists, we have more than one example of their art." The art gifts also include three tapestries by Alexander Calder and an oil by Lewis Ramsey. The new Moses art includes three temperas (one unfinished) and an original stitchery. "The unfinished work, 'Mother and Child,' from 1934, is important because it helps identify the process Grandma Moses used when she worked," work-ed," says Day. Another of the paintings pain-tings has been featured as a print on a holiday greeting card." Bryan A. Larson of Salt Lake City Ci-ty donated the Moses works. Moses (1860-1961) was a self-taught self-taught artist who began painting at age 78 by copying Currier and Ives prints. Her naive style attracted the attention of Louis Calder, a New York art collector, when he saw them at an exhibition of unknown American painters. She became famous for her landscapes land-scapes of country life that depicted the atmosphere of seasonal life. She favored panoramic scenes with many active figures engaged in community communi-ty endeavors such as harvesting and sugaring. Three fiber works entitled "Floating Circles," "Moon" and "Swirl" by Calder (1898-1976) are an anonymous gift. The multi-talented artist worked in many art styles, but he is perhaps best known for his innovative mobiles in the 1950s and '60s. His tapestries reflect his personal style of using bright colors in distinctive patterns. He earned a degree in mechanical mechan-ical engineering and studied at the Art Student's League in New York. The 1971 gold medal winner for sculpture by America's National Institute In-stitute of Arts and Letters also worked work-ed as a book illustrator and painter. Heber Grant Taylor and Heber J. Grant and Company donated an oil Orem-Geneva Tirnes- 0 Parents ' j-lelp By Krisline Vietnam from eating the plants, but our dog no longers enjoys romping through the garden. The red pepper powder makes him sneeze! Lori Davidson Orem, Utah Thank you, Lori. If you have problems with small pests such as insects eating your garden, you might try planting some marigolds among the vegetables. Marigolds are a natural insecticide. Also, just as a tip, Our children had rabbits for a w hile (a short while, thank goodness! ). We also had some young apple trees for a short while. The rabbits ate bark off the apple trees all the way around the bottom and the trees died. If you have rabbits loose in your yard you may want to put a bit of chicken wire or other guard around the bottom of your trees. Looking Good To protect small garden plants from freezing, cut the bottom out of gallon plastic milk jugs and place them over the plants. Remove the cap to let in fresh air. The jugs are transparent enough to admit sunlight ; s : I 1 $ xi .' Ramsey completed in 1928 called "Path in the Forest, With Deer." Ramsey converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1887 and moved to Utah, but he left in 1892 to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago and to seek additional training in Boston, New York and Paris. He spent several years doing commissions for "stiff portraits of Mormon leaders." Home Designed Children's Shirts Dear Kristine: My children love to have cartoon characters put on their T-shirts. So I trace their favorite characters from coloring books, using a transfer pencil. Then I iron the transfer onto the sweat shirt. I then paint them with embroidery paint. It's easy! Also, I have sometimes let my children design their own pictures to be transferred onto their shirts. This is especially fun if you let the children do the embroidery painting. They love their self designed shirts ! Mrs. K. Anderson Heber City, Utah What a clever idea! He completed murals for the Hawaiian LDS Temple and painted landscapes. Lewis eventually left Utah again, this time for Hollywood, Calif., where he painted art card scenes and portraits of movie stars. James Mason, dean of the fine arts college, expressed enthusiasm for the donations. University presents in |
