Do you know a child whose performance is consistently remarkable in scholastics, music, art, leadership, and other forms of expression? Do you have a desire to see the youth of our community excel? Then don't miss the chance to become a charter member of the ALPINE ASSOCIATION FOR GIFTED CHILDREN (AAGC). Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 we will meet at Orem Jr. High School, 765 N. 600 West in Orem to organize the Alpine Association for Gifted Children. The Alpine Association for Gifted Children will be a chapter of the state wide organization, the Utah Association for Gifted Children. With the help of speakers and newsletters we can learn about the needs of gifted children and the resources available for gifted children. We will serve as an advocacy group to work with our schools. Being a chapter of the Utah Association for Gifted Children will make it possible for AAGC to have a more effective voice at the state legislature, the governor's office, and state and local school boards. In this age of budget deficits, program cuts, and eroding educational opportunities, we must 5:10 "Hot Dog... It is our responsibility to ensure that an adequate education is available to all children, not just those who are slow or average learners. Mark Thursday, May 8th on your "The Immigrant" To Open In de Jong Concert Hall Brigham Young University audiences au-diences will have one opportunity to see "The Immigrant: A Hamilton County Album," actorplaywright Mark Harelik's acclaimed love story about his father and grandfather. , The new play will be staged by the Denver Center Theatre's touring company May 9 at 8 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center. The play was developed at the Denver Center Theatre in 1985 and this year was honored as one of only 12 plays chosen nationwide for the prestigious "Plays in Process," published by the Theatre Communications Com-munications Group. "The Immigrant" features Harelik playing his grandfather, and is based on the true story of a Russian Jewish immigrant who lands in the unlikely spot of Hamilton County; Texas, in 1909. Like the turning of family album pages, the play traces a man's efforts to establish roots in a new land. In the early 1900s the U.S. government govern-ment created a plan to ease the congestion con-gestion of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who were settling in New York. During a six-year period, it routed ships from these European countries to Galveston, Texas. The plan was abandoned because many immigrants felt separated, from their j culture and made their way back to New York. Harelik's grandfather was one of those who stayed. He began working in Hamilton, a town south of Dallas, as a penniless banana salesman who quickly worked his way up to being the owner of a dry goods store. The author conceived the play in 1984 when he reflected that so many of the people who had been important in his early life were growing old and dying. His beloved grandfather was living in a nursing home. Don't throw out overripe bananas. Mash or sieve them, sprinkle on a little lemon juice and freeze. Use later in cake or bread batter. calendar ! Don't let our youth with the greatest promise receive the least attention. Excellence is achievable. If you would like further information, please contact Elaine Rotz, 226-7940 or Joyce Scofield at 224-4577. On one occasion, when his son took him for a drive on Sunday, the grandfather saw his name in three-foot three-foot letters on a business. He couldn't remember that he had founded the store in 1911. He couldn't remember that his three sons were successful businessmen. And he couldn't remember where he was or why he came there. But he said, "That's my name, all right. I must have been some kind of big shot around here." Harelik's dad was amused by the anecdote, but the playwright was stunned. "Like Jimmy Stewart in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' I had never realized how much a man can affect the lives of others and truly influence the quality quali-ty of life for his children and neighbors even if he is a quiet, unassuming,' undramatic man. Even if he is unaware that the whole thing ever happened," said Harelik. "There is no such thing as a common com-mon man. Anyone whose life is led by love is sure as shooting a big shot." From that insight he developed a play and tried to picture that young man of 19 stepping off a boat that had transported him from the Middle Ages into the 20th century. - While much of the play is fiction, Harelik's goal of giving his audience's the sense of what led a little town to "open its arms to a bit of the distant world" is true. This is the second time in two years that BYU has housed a production produc-tion by the Denver Center Theatre Company. In the summer of 1935, the company's acclaimed musical, "Quilters," used BYU as part of its tour. Tickets for "The Immigrant" are available through the music ticket office, of-fice, 378-7444, as part of the Music Department's Performing Arts Series. The company is sponsored by Mountain Bell. |
