Show ' u 1 2,000.000 j , ; -. ..... t, 4 I Foresight For Water Supply A farsighted 2020 vision vi-sion over the past 130 years has assured Central Cen-tral Utahns a full cup of fresh mountain water. But can we keep the cup filled for our growing population? popula-tion? Planners say, yes, with a combination of existing ex-isting and future sources. Utah's foresight has produced pro-duced a plan called the Central Utah Project (CUP) to bring water to Salt Lake and Utah Valley's Val-ley's estimated 2020 A.D. population of roughly two million people. Two million people can consume a lot of water, 220 gallons per person per day considering attendant atten-dant .industries, parks, golf courses, and football fields; that's around 160 trillion gallons per year, or a half million acre-feet. acre-feet. Picture a football field (about one acre of land) covered with water 1 foot deep that's the equivalent of one acre-foot. Picture 500,000 football fields covered with water one foot deep to get an idea of how much water will be needed for Central Utah's 2020 A.D. population. popula-tion. Curiously, a 2020 farsighted vision has long been a part of assuring Utah's water supply. Back in 1847, Utah pioneers had a simple solution to. their water problems. They merely diverted City Creek to irrigate ir-rigate land where downtown down-town Salt Lake City now stands. By 1865, these and other settlers had built diversion dams and canals to irrigate a million and a half acres from Brigham City to St. George. As people continued to gravitate gravi-tate into the State during the latter part of the 19th century, the demand for irrigation water increased. But, then as now the supply could not keep up with the demand. By 1900, the population popula-tion of Salt Lake County had grown to over 77,000 and that of Utah County to over 32,000. By 1950, Salt Lake County had increased in-creased to nearly 275,000 while Utah County had I3 5kV3Cli ;tfrb f - I .-1,4- I 325,000 f I I , - ?frX!Z.' e-MS $T U;Mi? ti In 1847, when the pioneers came to Utah, water was a prime concern, as it is today. Population projections for the Wasatch Front predict 2 million people will live here in the year 2020. Plans for a future water supply are being planned now. Central Utah's - Then And Now risen to over 80,000. And over the next 28 years Salt Lake County had blossomed to an estimated 543,000 and Utah County to 189,000. The State of Utah, AARON CAKJJ Card Signs As Pageant Of The Arts Narrator Aaron C. Card, the "voice of Utah Pageant of the Arts for the past five years, has signed for another season with Utah's Ut-ah's fastest growing cultural cul-tural attraction, according accord-ing to Pageant directors Bill Kirkpatrick and David O. Brockbank. Card will narrate a script written by Betty G. Spencer, American Fork author. A resident fof Pleasant Grove, Card is an educator edu-cator by profession and has had seven years experience ex-perience in radio work. He is well known throughout through-out Utah Valley as a narrator nar-rator for various civic-and civic-and church productions. Pageant audiences frequently ask if the narration nar-ration is taped. The first year this was so, but since that time, the narrator has been seated in the control booth at the rear of the theater, taking his cues from the director and enjoying the "living pictures of the Pageant along with the audience. Today, in 1979, we have a proposed plan to help meet these objectives. Reconnaissance teams were begun in 1939 and the plan to meet Central Utah's water needs to the year 2020 was designed by the Bureau of Reclamation and the State. The name "Central Utah Project" was adopted in 1945. Congress Con-gress approved the CUP as a participating project pro-ject with the Colorado River Storage Project in 1956. (The Colorado River Storage Project allows 7 states in the Colorado River Basin to share the enormous supplies of the Colorado River.
