Letter To The Editor I bellfeve that the newly elected Utah Co. Republican Party Chairman, Chair-man, Howard Nielsen will do his best to listen to and work with each person who is concerned enough to give suggestions and assistance to him in preparing pre-paring for the vitally important im-portant 1980 elections. It is important that we work on all levels of government to elect persons per-sons who will help our Senators to give back to the states and to the local governments their rightful right-ful governing powers. Our elected officials cannot battle the powerful strings of the Federal bureaucracies without the genuine help of the citizens. citi-zens. Are the citizens of Utah County really willing to make the sacrifice necessary to cut those savings? Are they willing to get involved in one of the political parties even enought to fulfill their voting responsibilities when elected as a county or state delegate? Are they responsible enough to find out their duties and the schedule of meetings if there happens to be a breakdown of communications communi-cations somewhere between be-tween the leadership, area administrators, district leaders, and approximately approximate-ly 900 county delegates? The telephone number of the Utah Co. Republican Party is 377-1776. What kind of government govern-ment do the people of this county really want? Can we take it upon our selves to get informed, mark our calendars, and fulfill our responsibilities respon-sibilities according to proper pro-per priorities? Are we too busy to care about good government? govern-ment? Will a dictatorship allow us to be busy with our families or churches or businesses or schools?. Weill we find self-fulfillment in belonging to Big Sister and Big Brother? Kay Thoreson Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: One of the benefits Orem City employees have enjoyed during the past five or six years is an automatic annual increase to their salaries for cost-of-living. The adjustment is computed each year oy determining the percentage percen-tage increase in the National Na-tional Consumer Price Index; In-dex; the City's employee salary scale is then increased in-creased by that same percentage. per-centage. The justification offered by City officials for this employee benefit is that employee salaries should be allowed to maintain main-tain constant purchasing power. In other words, the salaries of Orem City employees em-ployees arenot eroded by rampant inflation which affects all of us. In addition to this lucrative cost - of - living benefit, City officials build into the City's operating budget each year a merit salary increase for each employee of 4 to 7. With inflation anticipated antici-pated to be' in the neighborhood neigh-borhood of 12 to 14 this year, the time Has come for Orem City officials to face the hard question of changing the method of budgeting for and administering employee em-ployee salaries. Citizens cannot afford to have tax revenues managed in such a way as to give nearly every City employee a salary increase of 16 to 21 this year. I, for one, value the services rendered by each and every City employee, and I feel that meritorious service should be rewarded. reward-ed. As the City's budget, which will become effective effec-tive July 1, 1979, is considered con-sidered by our elected officials, of-ficials, I encourage them to seriously consider eliminating eli-minating the automatic cost-of-living escalator for City employee salaries. To take this courageous step would demonstrate a resourceful management manage-ment of tax dollars expected ex-pected by all Orem citizens. citi-zens. Mrs. L. Davis New District Ranger For P. G.
