Show FliijD-ln)7(iO TTaDuDOS W wo Orem-Geneva Times" -May 31, 1979 n by Doug Davis 7 It's finally happened! The Tennessee Senate unanimously unan-imously passed a bill renaming renam-ing a section of U.S. Highway 411 in Sevier County, Tenn., the Dolly Parton Parkway. The bill was passed in the House of Representatives earlier in the current legislative legisla-tive session and now requires only the signature of Governor Gover-nor Lamar Alexander to become law. And since the Governor is said to be a staunch country music lover, it's all in the bag, so to speak. IB fir ; '', ' " ' t Dolly Parton There's only one thing wrong with the project. The people responsible for this idea picked the flattest piece of highway in the entire state. And every red-blooded country music fan knows that is certainly not in keeping with the Dolly Parton image. Dolly says she is "tickled to death" to have a parkway named after her (especially in Sevier County where she grew up), and hopes that maybe she'll get back home more often now so she can ride on the parkway. The vote in the Senate was 20-0 in favor of passage of the bill probably one of the few times in history when a group of politicians all agreed. In the meantime, there is nothing new in the much-talked-about lawsuit, in which Porter Wagoner is suing Miss Dolly for some big bucks. Porter claims that Dolly owes him a certain percentage of her income for several years from the time she left his show. Parton and Wagoner were the darlings of country music for several years, before Dolly fled the Music City scene for a new band, new management, new record producer, and certainly a new sound. The change has gained a new following for Dolly, but without a doubt at the expense of some of her old diehard fans who would rather hear the pure country sound of the first Parton records. I guess that's what they mean when they tell you that you can't stop progress. j MM Porter Wagoner But Dolly still has enough savvy, or at least the right advisors, to stay in touch with the Nashville sound. This was quite evident last October Oc-tober when she won the 'Entertainer of the Year" award.
