Show S3 Wednesday, July 12, 2000 PCPAF recruits sponsors for new season by Jane Southey OF THE RECORD STAFF Patrons of the arts gathered at the home of Bam and Rick Coleman on Thursday, July 6. to help jump-start the upcoming season of performances at the George S. and Dolores Don Ecdes Center for the Performing Arts. Sponsors of past Park City Performing Arts Foundation events were invited to sample the menu of potential shows while socializing with local performers and fellow philanthropists. phi-lanthropists. While the upcoming season is yet to be unveiled in its entirety, several of the performances, which have been scouted out by the PCPAF staff, found sponsorship sponsor-ship at the event. "We try to create a diverse program to match our diverse community." commented the organization's executive director Ten Orr. The presentation of a ' menu' of performers certainly spanned a range of arts, from comic dance to Native American singers to gospel. By Thursday night's conclusion, five of the 18 potential shows had gained sponsorship. Since last year's Di3s. a group of local female singers, was such a success, this vear, the men will have their Deer Valley by Kat James OF THE RECORD STAFF Despite the threat of rain and the cooler temperatures, the crowd packed the ski hill behind Snow Park Lodge to hear the Utah Symphony and guest v ocalists ocal-ists perform a talent-packed evening of show tunes, titled "A Century of Song 100 Years of Broadway." It was also the introduction intro-duction if assistant conductor Scott O'Neil, who replaces Bundit L'ngrangsee in August. The shefw got underway with ONeil directing the orchestra in a rousing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" Overture from the show, "George M." O'Neil seemed totally at home and comfortable with the venue and his musicians. musi-cians. Rather than a full orchestral orches-tral set as is the usual practice, the second piece, "Forty-Second Street Lullaby of Broadway," introduced us to three guest stars all Broadway performers Kim Crosbv. An unusually comic act, Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo, a troupe of talented talent-ed and entertaining men on toe shoes, was also sponsored. Gospel fans will be pleased to learn that Sweet Honey and the Rock, an all-women contemporary contempo-rary group will appear in the season line-up. Finally, Montana Logging and Ballet Company, a popular comedy group, w hich appears regularly on National Public Radio, will also fit into the upcoming season. "When you're involved in the arts, you're involved in the best part of the human experience." commented Orr C.ven the fundraiser's attendance, it would seem that many Parkites hope to help further this experience. Speaking at the event in support of the arts, were Laura Murphy of Park Citv Mountain Resort, Blair Feulner of KPCW. Steve Boyer of American Express, Gary Cole of Cole Sport, Publisher Michael Kearns. Tom Lazour of Delta Airlines, outgo- ski hill becomes the 'Great White Way5 and Timothy Shew. From there, a time-line was drawn, as each tune featured a solo or combinations of the three vocalists. They covered the '30s and '40s with music by Cole Porter ("Anything Goes"). Rogers and Hammers! ein ("Carousel") and George Gershwin ("Lady Be Good ") lo the '80s and '90s with Steven Sondheim ("Follies'") and Andrew Lloyd-Webber ("Phanlom of !he Opera"). Along with the music, the performers shared anecdotes from "The Great White Way" and quotes from various composers com-posers and reviewers. They never lost a beat, except when a gust of w ind earned away some sheet music. All in slride for these pros. The symphony once again proved deserving of the highest accolades. In addition to improving the group's financial standing, the Eccles stage has also hosted and will continue to host performers per-formers of Olympic quality. During the 2(K2 Olympic Games, the PCPAF will host both Pilobolus and Akin Ailey dance troupes, groups, which have been officially selected by the Olympic Committee for the monumental feat, and these musicians always sound as if they've been part of Ihe ac! from day one. Their precision and versatility ver-satility demand our recognition and appreciation. The highlight of the night, if applause is any indication, was Nat Chandler's rendition of "Music of the Night" from "Phantom" all five-and-a-half minutes, as performed in stage production a challenge to any singer. The moment of silence, except for the reverberation of his high note, was spine-tingling. The performance deserved and got a standing ovation. Timothy Shew, who is currently current-ly performing the role of Jean Valjean on Broadw ay, then performed per-formed Claude-Michel Schoenberg's "Bring Him Home" from "Les Miserable." Truly an emotional performance, bu'. without that hin note of Chandler's. This piece should have perhaps preceded "Music of REAM 12, ZOOO nenees. A blonde, pony-tailed young lady of about seven or eight performed her dance steps along with each piece of music, from ballet, lo jazz and every tempo m-beiween. She is obviously already a serious dance student and we wish her luck with her career. And so the evening ended and the weather held, although many, I'm sure, would have accepted a bit of rain, needing it like we do.
