This year, five notable newcomers new-comers to Park City will compete for the $217,500 first-place check that will be awarded to the winner win-ner on Aug. 20. They are: Bruce Fleisher. Larry Nelson. Andy North. Christy O'Connor and Doug Tew ell. BRUCE FLEISHER . He is corning'off a second-place second-place finish at the U.S. Senior Open that concluded Sunday in Bethlehem. Pa. Fleisher, the 19W Senior PGA Tour Player of the Year as well as Rookie of the Year, won seven times as a first-year player in 19W. and has already recorded three victories in 2000. This year's wins came at the Royal Caribbean Classic, the GTE Classic and the Home Depot Invitational. He has also finished second three times, and has already passed the $1 million mark in earnings this season. LARRY NELSON Was a three-time major championship cham-pionship winner during his days as a PG A Tour player. Nelson won two PGA Championships (1)81 and '87) and the 1983 U.S. Open. In his three seasons as a Senior PGA Tour player. Nelson has won seven times, including victories this year at the Las Vegas Senior Classic and the Boone Valley Classic. Nelson has also finished second four other times. At the just-concluded U.S. Senior Open. Nelson shot an even-par. 72-hole score of 284 to tie for 19th. ANDY NORTH The two-time U.S. Open champion is familiar with Park Meadows, having worked on the ESPN broadcast team that has televised the Novell Utah Showdown. Although he is on Tour this year without an exemption having turned 50 on March 9 he immediately made his presence known when he teamed with Jim Colbert to win the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, an unofficial Tour event. In his rookie campaign. North has played in eight Senior Tour events, with his best finishes coming com-ing at the Countrywide Tradition and Bruno's Memorial Classic, both sixth-place showines. He also played in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on the PGA Tour, but missed the cut. CHRISTY O'CONNOR The Gaiway. Ireland, native had a fine rookie season a year ago by w inning twie and finishing finish-ing 2(ith on the money list with more than $700,000 in official earnings. O'Connor rarely played the PGA Tour in his younger years, but did record 13 victories in Europe. Last season. O'Connor won the State Farm Senior Classic and the Foremost Insurance Championship.
