O'VlC - ' - '-Or VV;H' U'M i COURTESY OF THE PARK CITY MUSEUM AND FRASER BUCK COLLECTION (ell 01 Empire Canyon By Hal Ccmpton, research historian Park City Museum During the winter, hundreds of Deer Valley Resort skiers and, in the summer a few hikers and bikers, pass the site of the Little Bell Mine on what is now Bandanna ski run in Empire Canyon. Today, the only evidence of the mine is an aging ore bin and a large waste dump. The Little Bell Mine, located 1,700 feet south of the Empire Express ski lift and Daly West Mine, was discovered in 1880. Except for construction of a 200-foot exploratory tunnel, there was no systematic development until 1901 when Solon Spiro, for whom the Spiro Tunnel is named, acquired the 25 claims, comprising the Little Bell, and started construction of a shaft. Spiro soon sold his interests In the mine and used the profits to purchase the Bogen Mine claims that became the Silver King Consolidated Mine Company. The Little Bell shaft eventually reached a depth of 753 feet and the mine became a steady producer of lead and silver for 50 years. During the early years, there were many charges and counter-charges by officials of the Little Bell and Daly West Mines. Finally, the larger Daly West bought out the Little Bell and Quincy Mines and constructed a connecting tunnel in order to transport ore from the two mines into the 5.5 mile Ontario Drain Tunnel No. 2 and out of the underground. This made the oro bins obsolete. Falling metal prices in the 1940s caused the closing of the Little Bell and the buildings were demolished. Preservation work on the Little Bell ore bin and Installation of a historic plaque are expected to be completed this summer.
