Show Wednesday, January 26, 2000 The Park Record C-7 First-tima Continued from C-3 The second screening of "Nuyorican Dream" drew a larger crowd than the first night. Although CoIIyer didnt realize it until after the audience had left, one of her role models, filmmaker John Sayles, was in the audience. "He's a great filmmaker," said Collyer of Sayles. "I thought it was someone w ho just looked like him." she recalled. Collyer also ventured to a roundtable discussion at the House of Docs. Since then, the 20-year-old Australian director direc-tor of the documentary "Chasing Buddha" has been acclimatizing to both the snow and the atmosphere atmos-phere of Park City in Sundance mode. Courtin-Wilson film focuses on the life of his aunt, Robina Courtin, a Buddhist nun who travels the United States to share the teachings of Buddhism with prison inmates. "Chasing Buddha" is Courtin-Wilson Courtin-Wilson s first-ever entrance into the Sundance Film Festival. Having premiered on Friday. Jan. 21, Courtin Wilson said he has enjoyed the response so far. "It went well." he said, "there was a bit of a question-and-answer afterwards. That was the most re arding part of it." In fact, enjoying the interactions interac-tions with other directors and lovers of film has been something some-thing of a theme during Courtin-Wilson's Courtin-Wilson's festival experience thus far. He said that he has been amazed at the concentration of people with an interest in one another's projects. Speaking outside of the House of Docs, a venue on lower Main Street that is dedicated dedi-cated solely to documentary films, Courtin Wilson said, "I i if u T BAJACANT1NA Coolon smce 1963. On Monday. Jan. 24, Courtin-Wilson Courtin-Wilson attended a panel discussion discus-sion at the House of Docs that detailed some of the challenges facing documentarians in various countries, as well as the ' approaches needed to secure funding and support for documentary docu-mentary projects. The discussion was of interest to Courtin-Wilson, who faces the particular characteristics of Australian funding (largely public) pub-lic) for documentaries, but shares with all documentary directors the persistent problem of not being able to secure the funds to pursue the art form. Excited by the optimism of the discussion with regard to public interest in documentary and available funds, Courtin-Wilson Courtin-Wilson said that he has already sparked several interesting leads for future projects. As the festival moves on, Courtin-Wilson is looking forward for-ward to continuing to work on generating interest in "Chasing Buddha." Unable to afford a publicist, he has worked with the film's cinematographs. Vincent Heimann, to help inform festival-goers about "Chasing Buddha."
