In the first series of its kind for Intermountain, Junior 4 through Junior 6 athletes competed com-peted in South Series giant slalom specifically for those age classes. PCST was unstoppable on their home hill despite many challenges from their competition. competi-tion. At the conclusion of the series, the team secured three of a possible four overall titles with Maggie Kraft, Megan McJames and Ryan Simons bringing in the victories. Coinciding with the overall wins, PCST dominated the top 15 and secured over 75 percent of the top positions. The series' second race placed the men's competition as the tightest that they have seen this season. Only a 0.6-second differential dif-ferential separated the top six places after the first run. When times were final, PCST took home eight top spots in the men's race and all the PCST women placed in the top 15. Achieving personal bests with precise skiing were Jamie Boland. Ryan Hunter and Erica Lindbloom. PCST athletes will carry this confidence onto this weekend's South Series Super-G hosted at Park City Mountain Resort. But it has been a long road, particularly particular-ly for Louis. After crashing during a 1998 World Cup in Italy, where he tore the meniscus in his left knee, the Park City High graduate underwent under-went surgery that December. He was just starting to come on, earning earn-ing World Cup points on the circuit. cir-cuit. After catching an edge and extending his left leg, Louis went down and "proceeded to slid for life all way to the fence." Six months later the knee still wasnl responding to the physical therapy, so he had a second ortho-scopic ortho-scopic surgery. Then, during camp last October, he fell and tore the same medial meniscus - pushing back his recovery timetable. "The knee will definitely never be the same but I expect it to be back enough to do what I need to do on the hill," said Louis whose goal is to be racing by late February or early March. After living in Boulder, Colo, for six years, the former Parkite is also considering a return to the town his team calls home. "You can be the most driven person in the world, but you still need the sight of the ski hills to stay motivated." he said. For Shaffer, the rehab has been equally grueling, but she loo is eyeing eye-ing a return to the gates as soon as the knee is ready. "Skiing now will be more like therapy than my typical idea of skiing," ski-ing," she said. Training on mostly flat runs, Shaffer spent a month of daily workouts at TOSH just to get to that point. Shaffer, a RowMart Ski Academy alumnus, who has lived in Park City since her graduation, tore the cartiledge off her femur during the season's first World Cup in France. "I was going around a gate at the top of a turn and heard a crunch," said Shafffer who remarkably, remark-ably, finished the run and even walked on the badly damaged knee the next day. When swelling ensued she knew something was wrong and had surgery shortly afterward. It was the latest in a string of , bad luck for the Parkite. After tearing her ACL in "93 and suffering suffer-ing back problems in 96, she has only raced three of the five years since making the ski team. Both seem tired of the wait. If their determination at TOSH is any indication however, these skiers will be spending their time doing a different sort of specialty very soon. d 9tmm IRINC YOUR SUNDAMC!
