Democratic candidate can-didate for Utah's 3rd Congressional district, sax's Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy caught between his home country and the U.S., should be returned to Cuba. In an interview with The Park Record last weekend. Dunn said Gonzalez belongs with relatives in Cuba. Dunn also says the governmental govern-mental wranghngs that' have centered cen-tered on Gonzalez have become tiring. tir-ing. " I don think any parent would w ant that situation or any grandparent grandpar-ent would want that situation for their child," Dunn said. He adds that Congress should not hamper the attempts of Gonzalez's family to bring him back to Cuba. "1 think it's absurd for us to say "OK. we're going to take this little boy and we're going to subpoena him to come before Congress," Dunn said. "What in the world? What's that all about? The boy needs to be with his family. They should be able to come and get him." Dunn visited Park City as part of his campaign to unseat Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Provo). w ho did not face Democratic competition when he w as re-elected in 1998. "The fact that there was no challenge chal-lenge in '98, that was so unhealthy, and I've had people tell me "I'm Republican, but I'm glad you're doing this because we need to have some balance. We need to have some debate.'" Dunn said. In the interview, Dunn, who is backing Vice President Al Gore in his bid for the presidency, addressed a range of topics, including the 20CC Winter Olympics, the recent World Trade Organization talks in Seattle and the White House conservation strategies. Dunn said the WTO plays an important role in international trade, but the group needs reform. U.S. businesses should be able to rely on the WTO to ensure fair trade. The U.S., he said, should continue con-tinue working with the WTO because the group offers a platform in international trade circles. - "I think it would be to our disadvantage disad-vantage if we weren't there at the table to have a voice," Dunn said. Dunn, though, sympathizes with some of the groups who were protesting the trade talks. "1 think that they, rightly so, are not thrilled," he said, adding, "I think what important to focus on is because of the WTO, it helps give us a forum to set those ground rules. If we didnt have that, then where is the forum for us to say 'OK. we're going to play together so how are we going to play fair?"" Dunn wants state and local governments gov-ernments and Washington to work in unison on conservation issues and avoid messy land decisions, such as the creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah. "As a Utahn. I agree with the approach that the governor has taken on the environmental issues where the important thing to focus on is the process, where different parties can agree to disagree and '' t If , " - v "J V - - - - PHOTO COURTESY Of DONALD DUNN Democrat Donald Dunn, pictured with Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Smith, the oldest child of Robert F. Instead of just saving we're going to have a blanket X million mil-lion number of acres and that s going to cut off all access. Or, on the flip side, saying 'No wilderness and access for everybody." he said. Dunn adds: "The federal government govern-ment should not come in in the dark of night and designate 'This is going to be the way it's going to be.' That s not the way government should work." Washington has a role in helping Utah put on the Olympics, Dunn said. Recently, a few Congressmen have questioned the amount of federal fed-eral money that Utah is receiving because the state is hosting the Olympics. Dunn says Congress should support the Olympics because the event w ill reflect on the entire country. "They're not just Utah s Games, they're not just Salt Lake and Park City. They're America's. We're the host and we have to be a good host so that means the U.S. does have some responsibilities to make sure there adequate security, to make sure they're assisting whoever hosts the Olympics, Dunn said.
