Show Wednesday, January 26, 2000 Harry 0's Main Street night club transformed into a techno expo during Sundance Festival by Jana Southey OF THE RECORD STAFF As the Sundance Film Festival continues to attract those on the cutting edge of film, it seems natural natu-ral that information highway gurus want to get in on the action. In addition to the Sundance Apple Technology Conclave (located in the house of Docs) and the Media and Technology Center (located at the Inn on Prospector Square), an independent "Interactive Lounge" has found its w ay to the festival's hub. Located at Harry O's, in the middle of Main Street. ShowBIZData.com, Entertaindom and Sun Microsystems have joined forces in creating a dot-com universe. uni-verse. The high-tech haven opened Friday. Jan. 21 and remains open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Saturday, Jan. 29. Anyone wandering the streets may venture up the stairs of the Memorial Building into Harry O s -perhaps catching a glimpse of a man dressed as a banana along the way. At the entrance to Harry O's guests are asked to sign in (one might be lucky enough to receive a free pen at this juncture). Entering the interactive lounge, one sees large screens, computers ev ery where a center bar filled with Jamba Juice and Bad Ass Coffee -no booze during the day. and large silver partitions. In general, it's a new-agey feel, giving the private club an entire makeover during daylight hours. Beginning at the left entrance, there is an area occupied by ' First Rites." From 9 a.m. to 1 1 a.m., first-time first-time filmmakers can drop off their tapes at this location in the hope that they may be picked to become a part of First Rites, a program sponsored by Tribe and The Asylum. A "First Rites" section will be set up in every Hollywood Video store, presenting the work of brand new filmmakers. According to representative Sherry Strain, the group hopes to select a director by Saturday. Jan. 29. After expenses, the company and the filmmaker share a 50-50 profit. Comfortable chairs and several computers (primed to be played with) fill the LOADtv section of the lounge. LOADtv is a company dedicated to original programming for the Web. For those just itching to play with the newest in technology, a group of Sun Microsystems computers com-puters line the wall. Abov e them, a Hitachi plasma screen shows off its modern capacity. As the Interactive Lounge explorer rounds the corner, he or she stumbles upon the Burly Bear area. Touted as the No. 1 college col-lege network in the United States by the representative at the loca-tion. loca-tion. this Internet and television network targets the 18 to 24 year-old year-old age group. Occupying a huge stage creen and the computers across from it. wmmunities.com boldly greets the lounge wanderer. According to Lauren Lew is. the public relations representative for ShowBIZDAta.com. communities.com is the company credited with creating the "buzz-about "buzz-about the "Blair Witch Project." Communities.com is a graphic, rather than text-based chat serv er. Throughout the week, the company will hold Internet-based chats with celebrities visiting the Sundance Film Festival. Anyone can log on. pick a character (from Miss Piggy to a smiley face) and fire questions at the celeb-of-the-day. Rounding the next corner, the lounge explorer finds the eBay area with representatives promoting the website. Taking on a good cause, eBay is conducting an auction of celebrity donations. Items ranging from the blue sports coat Robert Redford wore in "Indecent Proposal" to Sophia Loren's red heels will be sold to the highest bidder. bid-der. Proceeds from the auction go to amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research). Occupying the next area. GOD Games (The Gathering of Dev elopers) display the latest in graphic and gory computer games. Not for weak stomachs, these computer com-puter experiences certainly have a folk hero, and acceptance does not come so easily. In fact. Visitors are invited to enter the Internet and explore it at leisure - ev en checking their e-mail if they desire. Wlien all this futuristic futuris-tic creativity gets a little overwhelming, over-whelming, Jamba Juice or Bad Ass Coffee are on hand on the main lev el of Harry O's, providing a little boost. Jamba Juice features a "Festival Recovery Blend" for just that purpose. Upstairs, the ready-to-be-pampered can explore the richly decorated Dragon Oasis stand. Here, visitors can pick up some elixir or oxygenated water from a trained herbalist. A masseuse is also on hand to work out festival kinks. Two of the masterminds behind the scheme, are Show BIZData.com president and CEO Oliver Eberle and Entertaindom 's Jim Banister. "It's a beautiful caterpillar and a beautiful, beautiful butterfly." said Banister, who explained that each day Harry O's transforms from Interactive Lounge to private party venue and then back again to Interactive Iounge. Although the Jamdance Music Festival at night is closed to the public, those looking for a peek at the action can visit the www.jam-dance.com www.jam-dance.com website. The evening festivities are scheduled to feature big-name bands, however, the names have not been disclosed by Harry O's.
