Although many of the Miners had good matches, none of the PCHS athletes came away with a victory. Union stomps the Miners 91-47 PCHS coach Jim Fleming misses worst loss of the season as wife delivers a son by Dave Fields OF THE RECORD STAFF Park City High School boys basketball coach Jim Fleming missed Wednesday's game against Union because his wife was delivering deliv-ering the couple's second son. The Miners were hoping to give Fleming a gift in honor of his new son a win. Turns out Fleming didnt exactly exact-ly get a gift but he did get to miss the team's worst loss of the season. Union beat Park City 91-47. Senior J.R. Bell scored 15 points and Adam McMullin scored nine . , JV coach Bob Ogle took over the reins in Fleming's absence and said Union shot well and "went to the offensive glass real well." Bartleson on Union: "I've never seen a team like this in my life." No. 1 -ranked Union rolls through Lady Miners, proves its place atop the poles by Dave Fields OF THE RECORD STAFF Usually-talkative John Bartleson seemed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome syn-drome Thursday following the Park City High School girls varsity varsi-ty basketball team's 64-49 loss to Union the previous night. Over and over, Bartleson said: "I've never seen a team like that in my life." "They were unreal. They pressed like their life depended on it," Bartleson continued. The ladies of Union pressed Park City until they turned over the ball, ran the court and took the first open shot. The result was a 15-point loss for the Lady Miners to think about on the three-hour bus ride home from Roosevelt. After a frustrating 19-3 first quarter, Union rallied in the second sec-ond to score 27 points. Eventually Bartleson played the girls off the bench to get experience experi-ence instead of desperately trying Field Notes: Continued from B-7 every time she saw a star. Never would she forget watching Close perform in Sunset Boulevard, eyes rolled with a long sigh and slight head shake. Must have been some performance. After waiting in line for a half hour, the Sundance gate keepers gave the line of hopefuls theatrical theatri-cal heart attacks as they let the lucky few from the front of the line into the performance and then stopped the line's flow into the Black Box. Every minute or so, a woman at the end of the line would anxiously peer around the line saying, "I better get in...I worked on this." By the time the program started start-ed a half hour late, everyone that stood in line was in the theatre. The Gimmick's director spoke at the beginning of the program and Union outrebounded Park City 27-6 in the first half but the Miners didnt do much to help themselves from the free-throw line. Park City shot 9 for 26 from the free-throw free-throw line in the first half. By the time the Miners headed to the locker room, Union had a 54-18 lead. "The game was pretty much over in the first half," said Ogle. Park City faces Uintah at home Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. Individual scorers: J.R. The Park City High School boys to come back against such a developed devel-oped team. Park City outscored Union 18-15 in the third. By game's end, seven Lady Miners scored including 14 from Liz Jensen. The freshmensophomore team faced Judge at home Friday afternoon but the varsity girls did not play. Indivfdual scorers: Larissa Gomez, 4; Cami Anderson, 10; Allison Earnshaw, 4; Liz Jensen, 14; Amy Jensen, 8; Andrea McMillan, 6; Amy Schofield, 3. JV has some "bright spots" The Park City High School girls JV basketball team played a strong first half but couldn't overcome over-come the pressing Union style that punished the varsity girls. Amanda Smith scored nine points in the 40-61 loss to Union. "They played pretty well in the first...there were some bright spots," varsity coach John Bartleson said. Part of Park City's problem was free-throw shooting. Park lose the black, find gold my pessimism flourished. Jokes raced through my head as I looked around at the eclectic audience thrilled to be involved a , "work in progress." Personally, I was doubting my decision to attend but after enduring endur-ing the waiting list line from hell, I was in for the whole ride. Suddenly the lights went off and immediately the Black Box earned its name. The only light was the green glow of the EXIT signs. A woman's voice broke the eerie silence and a beam of light illuminated illumi-nated Dael Orlandersmith the woman who would spend the next 90 minutes captivating me with the story of Jimmy and Alexis. Her shiny silver rings reflected the only light in the room cast directly upon her. She entertained the audience with sayings and mannerisms foreign for-eign to me and evidently most of the others sitting motionless in the JV basketball team got schooled in the first quarter against Union. At one point, Union had a 20-2 lead. Union's Rasmussen scored nine of his 20 points in the first quarter. Then, the Miners woke up in the second quarter, "and decided to play," said Ogle. By outscoring Union 18-12 in the second, Park City closed to within four points. A back-breaking miracle shot by Union at the first-half buzzer deflated , Park City's players who had worked so hard to close the gap. Union had a 10-point lead at the half. Park City scored more points in all three final quarters (18-12, 14-13 14-13 and 15-13), but couldnt overcome over-come a disastrous first. The Miners lost 58-51. ,Mvidual scorers: Tin Todd Francis);ili ellan,3 Portwood, nXhris Baijey, 5; Clay L-nnstiansen, z. City shot one for nine in the first half and Union made 13 of 15 freethrows. In addition, Union had three consecutive steals and scores resulting from the relentless press. Individual scorers: Lauren Vest, 2; Amanda Smith, 9; Amy Schofield, 7; Jen Joseph, 2; Laurie Solomen, 4; Louise Stephens, 1; Brittany Esty, 6; Allison Earnshaw, 9. A relative squeaker for freshmensophomore fresh-mensophomore Despite allowing 48 turnovers, the Park City High School girls freshmensophomore basketball team almost pulled out a victory against Union. The Lady Miners lost 46-38 after competing all 32 minutes Wednesday. The freshmensophomore team faced Judge Friday without the assistance of Ryan Tolpinrud and Brittany Esty who are playing in an Arizona soccer tournament. Respites from the vivid imagery consisted of a break in Orlandersmith's words and a change in color of light cast on the powerful woman. When it was over and the lights came back on I was reminded of the cellular phones and bottled water with black shoulder straps. All of the peripheral annoyances remained but now I knew why people peo-ple flocked to Park City for something some-thing other than skiing, mountain biking or golfing strong performances perfor-mances by talented people in a culturally-soaked environment. I wouldn't trade it for an evening of watching, Allison Earnshaw and J.R. Bell play varsity varsi-ty basketball but at least now I know that under all the black camouflage cam-ouflage there's some gold. ,Ryan i |
