This river, which rises in the Angolan mountains, carves a path right through the center of southern Africa, forming the border between modern day Zimbabwe and Zambia, and runs on through Mozambique to the Indian Ocean. Perhaps most famous for thoughts of David Livingstone, this 1,700 mile long river is a mixture of wilderness and absolute serenity. It has been dammed twice along its length, forming Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, and Lake Cahora Bassa in Mozambique. Before these it thunders over one of the world's greatest natural wonders the Victoria Falls. Additionally the Zambezi plays host to the world's highest natural bungee jump and the world's wildest white water rafting. Because of the dams and the falls it is not possible to continuously navigate the entire river, but aside from the white water rafting, some of the best game viewing imaginable can be had from canoes on the river in certain parts. A safari into either Zimbabwe or Zambia will give one the best cross section of the river and all the wonders it has to offer. Let us sample such a trip. Visitors from the United States will arrive in Zimbabwe, and while this remarkably modern African city has its attractions, a flight straight on to Victoria Falls maximizes your use of time. Take a step back in time at the recently refurbished colonial style Victoria Falls Hotel. the famous old colonial style, but recently refurbished Victoria Falls Hotel will allow one to recover from the jetlag in style. From the hotel one can take a short walk, dodging buffalo and antelope, to the edge of the falls. Here there are no hamburger stands and western paraphernalia you stand and gaze at this spectacle just as Livingstone did when he became the first westerner to record this phenomenal scene. One and a half times wider than Niagara Falls over a mile wide, and twice as high, one can only stand and gaze in awe from the many vantage points facing the falls. They are in fact five separate falls though often that is hard to discern. Early in the season after the rains in about April the spray is so great that it is difficult to see the falls themselves. But, come about March, the idea of white sand beaches, tropical sunsets and swaying palms starts taking over. The world, of course, offers many such paradises, but more and more people are discovering the joys of the South Pacific, and one pristine, private island in particular. The following is reprinted from Resorts and Great Hotels about Matagi Island Resort, listed by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the world's top 25 private island resorts. Easy to reach via Air New Zealand from Los Angeles, Matagi offers an alternative to the crowded beaches of Hawaii and the west coast of Mexico, at much the same price. "Fiji's northerN group of islands provides one of the most pristine destinations in the South Pacific. Deep sapphire waters pale into turquoise lagoons with dazzling white sand beachesvThe mttlti-hueor greens of the rain foresf cover mountarnfdps'and valleys teeming witll bird and animal life. '" "Wrapped around a submerged crater, horseshoe-shaped Matagi counts as the smallest in a cluster of volcanic islands off the coast of Taveuni. A short flight from the airports of Nadi or Suva, and a 20-minute boat ride, bring guest to Matagi's shores. Here they receive a warm welcome in true Fijian style at the island's only accommodations, Matagi Island Resort. "The Doublas family who have been in Fiji for three generations decided to share their corner of paradise with small groups of travelers in 1987. To maintain the island's intimate charm, the family built just 10 bures, or Fijian cottages, which hold a total of 24 guests. : "Traditional thatched roofs protect the tastefully designed bures, appointed with queen-size beds, screened lounge areas, fully-stocked fully-stocked mini-bars and private patios en suite. An especially remarkable bure, The Treehouse, perches 30 feet off the ground in an enormous Pacific almond tree. Perfect for honeymooners or couples wanting a romantic escape, this treetop refuge offers superb views across the-Tasraan Straits.- . -.- . A dining and lounge area serves as a gatheriffjf place Hit the resort's deltcioiis' 1 meals, which join international and island cuisine with a selection of fine wines. A Fijian string band provides relaxing evening entertainment. "A white sand beach stretches the full length of the resort. Beyond, colorful reefs await underwater exploration. Corals in brilliant shades of purple, red and gold grow in massive clusters and provide hiding spots for bright, tropical fish and other denizens of the deep like turtles, tuna, barracuda and giant manta rays. "Guests pursue a wide variety of water sports, like swimming in the clear waters around the island, windsurfing, snorkeling, waterskiing, paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing on a 16-foot Hobie Cat. Some try saltwater fly-fishing on the resort's recently-launched recently-launched 25-foot custom-designed vessel, testing their luck with homemade flies by Noel Douglas. Landlubbers play volleyball or croquet, hike up the mountain or enjoy bird-watching bird-watching and spectacular views. Weekly excursions visit waterfalls and other features of the nearby island of Taveuni.
