Based on the Cable TV cult hit, this is a hip and campy comedy thang. A mad scientist whose diabolical plan is to force people to watch the worst movies ever made. The scheme is foiled by his first victim, Mike, who actually enjoys watching bad flicks. A hilarious mish mash of off-the-wall 90 s goofiness. Suddenly orphaned Flora seeks refuge with her relatives, the Starkadders, a grim clan living on a bleak farm known as Cold Comfort. There she finds Ada Doom (the reclusive matriarch), Amos (the hell-and-brimstone preacher), Seth (a handsome air-headed Lothario), and a host of other eccentrics. Flora moves in and the hijinx begin. While many people associate Park City in the fall with stunning foliage and Autumn Aloft, Zion's Bank Silver Days will now replace the annual balloon festival with activities for the entire family. The celebration begins with the "Silver Streak" 10K Fun Run, Steeplechase Race and Kid's Run at 8:30 a.m. All ages and abilities of runners and walkers are invited to enjoy autumn in the mountains in these events, which will be followed fol-lowed by a Miner's Breakfast at the Park City Ski Area's Marigold Plaza from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Film series presents big Continued from B-5 two robot companions Crow and Tom Seryo. During each MST3000 movie, the trio toss off dozens of wisecracks covering cov-ering such a wide and obscure range of pop-culture references that sometimes even the show's producers don't always get the jokes. Some of the more accessible gags might include the following: follow-ing: Upon seeing the first exterior shot of a movie by low-budget, penny-pinching director Roger Corman, the comment comes: "I bet we're gonna see a lot of this location!" In the movie Teen-Age Caveman, Hollywood actors shamble along, pretending they're primitives on a hunting party, while the gang chants, a la Fort Bragg, "We are all Neanderthals; WE ARE ALL NEANDERTHALS; we are gonna have a ball; WE ARE GONNA HAVE A BALL!" The 1957 sci-fi flick It Conquered the World features one of Peter Graves' most listless list-less performances. As he absentmindedly whips out a revolver, we hear in voice-over: "General Patton used a gun just like this. Find out about it all on Biography!" The show has gone through changes. Its original hero, played by Joel Hodgson was replaced by Mike Nelson; it was dropped by Comedy Central but picked up by the Sci-Fi Channel. (Are you listening, Park City TCI?) But through it all, the three heroes have stayed, silhouetted at the lower right hand of the screen, ridiculing everything that comes their way. The Treasure Hunt begins at 11 a.m. at the Park City Ski Area and continues contin-ues until 6 p.m. Participants can start any time, but the earlier the better! Other Silver Days activities will continue throughout the day and will include musical entertainment at the Park City Ski Area and on Main Street, walking and trolley tours of Historic Main Street, an artists' show and an old-fashioned melodrama. "Mining era" food booths, reflecting Park City's historic his-toric ethnic diversity with Chinese, Irish, German and Scandinavian devoted following of the show, called MSTies, includes Neil Young and Steven Spielberg, and despite its limited circulation circula-tion on cable, the show openly encourages fans to tape and trade episodes among themselves. them-selves. It wasn't surprising that a MST3000 movie would be made. But the vintage movie selected for spoofing aroused a little controversy in sci-fi circles cir-cles the 1955 This Island Earth was considered a moderately-respectable moderately-respectable film for its time. Still, the flick does have its ridiculous elements. It features blond aliens with really big foreheads. fore-heads. The most recognizable face in the cast is Russell Johnson in a supporting role (which means, yep, plenty of Gilligan's Island jokes). And the climax features the hero beating up on a clumsy alien with an exposed brain. ("Oohh, I'm really vulnerable there!") Until MST3000 comes out on video, here's your best chance to see what the cable-cult hit is all about. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie plays only on Friday, Sept. 20, at 8 pm., at the Jim Santy Auditorium. Cold Comfort Farm looks like another specimen from the Masterpiece Theatre school of film-making, but it's a spoof also. Based on a 1932 satire by Stella Gibbon, the film throws together a modern heroine, who fancies herself a Jane Austen type, into a D. H. Lawrence rural setting where the characters charac-ters are so bizarre and grime-ridden grime-ridden they're in need of a visit from the Board of Health. A drilling demonstration will show how difficult and bone-breaking bone-breaking mining could be; quilting, barrel-making and welding will also be going on. Kids' activities will include panning for silver, story-telling and an obstacle course. Just as in the mining days, a real fortune teller will be roaming roam-ing the streets, ready to tell people what the future holds. A Centennial Laser Show (weather permitting) at the Park City Ski Area is scheduled at dusk to wrap up the Silver Days festivities. During the Zion's Bank Silver Days festivities, Park City's Silver Mine Adventure will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for those who want to experience firsthand what it was like to be a miner by going down 1,500 feet into the original Ontario Mine shaft. The tour also Rufus Sewell and Kate Beckinsale star in the John Schlesinger film "Cold Comfort Farm" showing this Saturday, Sept. 21, as part of the Park City Film Series. a thoroughly original, slightly off-balance and terribly amusing film that is a sparkling oasis in the sea of sludge at the cine-plex." cine-plex." Kate Beckinsale stars as Flora Poste, an orphaned 19-year-old city sophisticate who must go off to find new lodgings with her squalid country cousins, the Starkadder clan. She considers it her profession in life to tidy things up, and certainly cer-tainly has her work cut out for her at Cold Comfort Farm. The collection of rural oddballs odd-balls is ruled by matriarch Ada Doom (Sheila Burrell) who never leaves her room. Her son-in-law Amos Starkadder neglects the farm in favor of excoriating his congregation at the Church of the Quivering Brethren. An old geezer, Adam Lambsbreath, just likes being with his cows, Graceless and Aimless. And a would-be writer, Mybug, (Stephen Fry) attempts to woo Flora by cooing, coo-ing, "I'm engorgedly in love with you." Flora takes the measure of this lot, and many other eccentrics besides, and never loses her determination to whip them into shape. Mary Dickson, again, hails the film for its "smart script, marvelous characters charac-ters and uniformly shining performances." per-formances." She says that Cold Comfort Farm is "A smashing parody with a delightfully tongue-in-cheek tone, right down to its story-book ending." It plays on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. at the Jim Santy Auditorium. ill |
