The ball hit the ground and bounced before Chad Crowther recovered it for the Miners. However, the play was ruled down by the officiating offici-ating crew who said the ball must bounce first on an on-sides kick. An additional 15-yard penalty was assessed to PCHS for not giving North Sanpete room to make a fair catch. "It went 15 yards in the air and we tried to catch it but missed and the ball bounced. They (North Sanpete) didn't signal for a fair catch," Tomasiezwicz said. "The officials explained it three different ways. It was a break that went in their favor. That's just how it goes sometimes." The ball was spotted on the Park City 46-yard line where the Hawks capitalized on their first play from scrimmage. North Sanpete's K.C. Anderson took the ball and rumbled 44 yards for the Hawks' second touchdown in 19 seconds counting North Sanpete's final play of the first half. Anderson struck again for North Sanpete scoring on a 23-yard 23-yard pass play from Jacobson and running the ball in from the one-yard one-yard line to boast a 34-7 lead. On the Miners' final possession Sun sets HAYS, Kan. (AP) Josh Holweger, defensive tackle for Hays High School's varsity football foot-ball team, took himself out of the game Friday night after the first quarter. It was not because he was hurt. Nor had he become disheartened, with his team was trailing 7-3. And he certainly had not lost his zest for the sport. It was because sundown was near and because he put family and religious beliefs before football. foot-ball. Holweger and his family are members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. For them. Sabbath begins at sundown Friday and ends at sundown Saturday. The Holwegers attend church services ser-vices Saturday. They treat the Sabbath as a special day for family. The television set remains off. "It's definitely not a secular day for us. It's a sacred day. It's a reflective day," said Karla Holweger. Josh, 18 years old and a senior, has gone out for football every year of high school. Walters drove Park City 70 yards to inside the 20-yard line but the Hawks Justin Hansen hit Walters from behind, recovered the fumble and ran 85 yards in the pouring rain for North Sanpete's final score. According to Tomasiezwicz, Tatton's injury is minor and he will play in the next game. "We struggled all game finishing finish-ing off drives. We just couldn't score. We know we are close and that's the frustrating part," explained Tomasiezwicz. "The score doesn't necessarily reflect the type of game it was. We played a tough first half and really outplayed out-played them." The Miners dominated the first quarter controlling the Hawks and driving the ball inside the 20-yard line on two occasions to come up empty handed. Early in the second quarter, PCHS's Ted Hunsaker scored on a three-yard touchdown jaunt to give the Miners the early 7-0 lead. "A lot of people don't realize how well we played in the first half," Tomasiezwicz asserted. "We played in terrible conditions going against the wind for most of the half and still managed to control on career a muscular 210 pounds, has the talent tal-ent to play football at some college level. But until Friday night, Josh had never played a single down in a varsity football game. In previous years, he waited behind first-string players and did not get a chance to enter a game before the sun went down. And with each successive week in the late summer and early fall, sundown sun-down arrives earlier on game nights during the football season. On Friday sundown was around 8:04 p.m. Hays High's season opener started at 7:30 p.m. This would be Josh's only varsity football foot-ball game of his high school career. As for playing college football. Josh realizes that will not be a possibility. pos-sibility. Most colleges play on Saturday, and a lot of college teams leave on Friday for the Saturday game site, said Karl. That schedule would conflict with the Sabbath. Besides, Josh has not compiled the high school statistics that college coaches want to see. So, four years of football practices and play in junior varsity games held during the week culminated for Josh on Friday night. The only problem was our efforts weren't turning into points." Hunsaker was held to a season low 60 yards rushing down from his season average of 133 yards per game. Provost led PCHS in rushing rush-ing with 65 yards as the Miners recorded only 135 yards on the ground. Passing totals were up with Tatton and Walters combining combin-ing for 111 yards in the air the Miners' best showing of the season. sea-son. Tomasiezwicz said the team suffered suf-fered from a lot of breakdowns that caused the Miners to lose their focus. He said the team let down their intensity level and defensively didn't use technique and fundamental tackling. "It comes down to how hard we practice. prac-tice. Our practices will help us to stay focused and intense for two hours during the game," Tomasiezwicz explained. The Miners will be looking for their second win of the season against Wasatch Friday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. in Heber. "Wasatch is a running run-ning team, they like to run a Power I or Wishbone offense, so our goal is to make them pass," Tomasiezwicz said. "We should be able to run against this team. If we can't rush for 150 yards, I will be really disappointed." Goals Continued from B-1 like Marie are getting a lot more playing time than I would normally nor-mally like them to, but she is doing a great job for us." The victory improves PCHS's region record to 2-1 with five games remaining. The Lady Miners goal is to finish the season strong enough to qualify for home field advantage and avoid a first round game in St. George. "Normally, I don't like to look that far ahead, but it takes a lot to get the kids to stay out of that scenario," Martinez asserted. "It takes a lot out of the team to travel down there at the start of the week. We need to finish the second half strong." Matsumoto feels the key to finishing strong is defeating Lehi. "We're looking ahead to Lehi," she said emphatically. "We want to avenge that loss." The Lady Miners will face Wasatch in their next game Thursday, Sept. 19, 3:30 p.m. in Heber.
