Show Wednesday, September 19, 1996 The Park Record B-7 The Park Record Activities Guide p The 14th Annual Tour des Suds set for this weekend by Shawn Stinson "-PECORD GUEST WRITER S So you've had a good summer and put a few miles on that mountain moun-tain bike you picked up last spring. Now is the time to put your legs and lungs to the test, one last time before the white stuff flies. ' That's right, it's time for the 14th Annual Tour des Suds, a raceride for all ability levels and age groups. This ride is a great way to have some fun, check out how the legs are doing for the upcoming ski season, sea-son, and an even better way to help out one of Park City's very worthwhile worth-while organizations, the Mountain Trails Foundation. The ride, beginning begin-ning in City Park and ending at Guardsman's Pass, is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Actually! only the ride is ending at Guardsman's Pass. Following the Tour, everyone is invited back to City Park for the Suds portion of the event, where riders will have the opportunity to replenish their vital energy sources from the event's sponsors, including Dave's Killr Burritos and the Wasatch Brew Pub. Tour des Suds is a six-mile hill climb with an altitude gain of 1,700 feet. The race typically attracts 160 or so riders and takes anywhere from 35 minutes to two hours to complete. Regardless of your time, the ride is a lot of fun and there are Western writers gather at Sundance to discuss status of Utah wilderness In the summer of 1995, the Utah congressional congres-sional delegation introduced a bill protecting only one-third of Utah's remaining public-lands public-lands wilderness, leaving the remainder wide open to development. In response, citizens in Utah and across the nation deluged members of Congress with letters of protest, calling for the preservation of these unique and magnificent magnifi-cent wildlands. Western writers Terry Tempest Williams and Stephen Trimble responded as well, rallying ral-lying some of the nation's most eloquent nature writers to contribute essays for a chapbook entitled. Testimony: Writers of the West Speak On Behalf of Utah Wilderness. The book was presented to Congress with the Starstream... by Lynda Ray For the week of Sep 19-25, 1996. Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) proclaimed, "If writing itself can be an act of public service, then this collection is it." One year later, the fate of these lands remains undecided and many of the Testimony contributors Rick Bass, Ann Zwinger, William Kittredge, Trimble and Williams are taking their message to a broader audience. On Saturday, Sept. 21, these writers will convene at Sundance to give a public reading from 4-6 p.m. Actor, director and long-time Utah resident Robert Redford will welcome the audience, intro your first completely filled-in savings account passbook. Tuesday and Wednesday are the days to relax. Your birthday month is finished and so is your birthday cake, Back to the organic produce department. LIBRA (Sept 22 Oct. 22) Let's face It. A Libra without a good relationship is like a politician without a party. If you're not Involved, you're not doing what you do best charm and compromise. (OK. No i more political references. I promise.) As your birthday month begins on Sunday, so does the opposition from the responsible responsi-ble planet Saturn to the Sun in your sign. Those of you who have been sitting on the commitment fence will be forced to commit. The six-mile ride heads up to Guardsman's pass after which everyone is invited back to City Park to "refuel" and enjoy the awards ceremony. If riding in the Tour is a little more activity than you would like, Park City Performances is presenting present-ing Neil Simon's Rumors for the last weekend at the Egyptian Theatre, Thursday through Saturday only. Also, the Saturday Summer Freestyle Jumping Series go if you pay attention to your dreams. I don't mean your "hopes and dreams." I mean your nocturnal dreams. Good night, Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 Dec. 20) As your jolly ruler Jupiter continues its residence resi-dence in the practical ambitious sign of Capricorn, many of you have been limiting limit-ing your travel-bug tendencies to weekend week-end trips or bicycle jaunts across town. This week's placement of Hedonistic Venus and Impulsive Mars in your 9th house of LONG journeys may have you heading toward the nearest airport with passport in hand. If you can't take off without endangering your career, I recommend recom-mend either enrolling in an adult education educa-tion class on World Culture or dating an attractive foreigner who doesn't mind traveling by bicycle. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 19) Yes. I suppose Capricorns are ambitious. You do seem to find your way to the top eventually. even-tually. However, I believe it's more a matter mat-ter of recognizing the right moves to make rather than actual hard work. This : weekend you're in the right place at the right time. You instinctually know how to accumulate some cash whether it's from your own investments or by using someone else's resources. On Sunday, the Sun moves into your career house for a one-month stay. Since your ruler Saturn will remain in the opposite house of home hearth, you'll have quite a conflict. What'll it be? The ladder to success or the ladder to paint the living room ceiling? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 Feb. 18) Even the most independent Aquanans are thinking about relationships right now. This week is living proof of the "can't live with 'em can't live without 'em credo that seems to be a theme in your life. You want to be with a significant other, but not ALL the time. You are struck with a sense of urgency on Sunday and Monday when the Moon in your spontaneous sign makes you emotionally impulsive about the love partnership thing. It's fun, but it could be temporary. Don't rush off to the wedding chapel yet. Your symptoms may be gone, but are you sure that your basic "disease" of singiehood is cured? PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 19) Sometimes you really believe that you are communicating communi-cating dearly, but your mate is just not listening. Well, this may be one of those times. With Mischievous Mercury moving in reverse in your opposite sign of Critical Virgo, you'H likely be blamed for any confusion con-fusion in spite of your alleged innocence. The Moon In your perceptive sign on Tuesday and Wednesday does help you sidestep any of the really messy misun-; misun-; derstandings. Although work and money seem to be on the right track, your friends are attempting to putt you off In another direction. (Please, please. Can Pisces come out to play?) Starstream by Lynda Ray c Internet: Starstmaol.com continues through Sept. 28 at the Utah Winter Sports Park, beginning begin-ning at noon. It's a great opportunity opportuni-ty to take a picnic, sit on the grass or deck, and watch some of the world's best freestyle aerialists train at Park City's state-of-the-art jumping jump-ing facility. duce the writers and speak about Utah's wildlands.
