Despite out- playing the Bees in nearly every ' statistic of the game, Box Elder came ' through with the most - important statistic, that being . more runs. Wednesday morning Pleasant Grove took the field bright and early against Sky View High . School to kick off the state tournament tourna-ment with a nine o'clock game. Perhaps the early start was Pleasant Grove's problem but they , could never completely get on . track with the exception of four 'runs in the second inning. . Meanwhile Sky View quietly chipped away at the Viking defense as they took the lead early in the first and then regained the lead in the third inning with two more runs. Pleasant Grove never was able to catch the Sky View following fol-lowing their scoreless third inning despite the fact that the Viking defense held Sky View scoreless during the fourth and fifth innings. In the end the Vikings fell 7-6.. to send them into the losers bracket. In their second game of the day, Pleasant Grove again struggled to get their offense rolling as it took four runs in the fifth inning to help the Vikings overcome a pesky Tooele team that gave Pleasant Grove all they could handle in a do or die game. The Viking's fifth inning heroics hero-ics were led by Sunny Smith's triple that got the ball rolling for Pleasant Grove as they were finally final-ly able take the lead. After captur- . ing the lead the Vikings were able to hold on during the sixth and seventh innings to extend their t season to the quarter-finals with their 5-3 victory over Tooele. Because of bad weather all of Thursday's games were delayed two hours to allow for the grounds crew to dry out the fields enough to continue the tournament. This created a small problem for Pleasant Grove as they were scheduled to play two games on Thursday if they were able to win their first game of the day. , However the late start of the first game made it impossible to play : the second game of the afternoon because, of the graduation ceremonies cere-monies that were being held for the graduating seniors. After the rain delay in the morning Pleasant Grove took the field against a familiar opponent. However this opponent was familiar famil-iar on the basketball court. Ogden High was the Viking's opponent in the basketball championship earlier earli-er in the year. For the Vikings this was a chance at a little payback for their heartbreaking loss in the basketball championship. Just as the, basketball game had been, this was an all out war defensively. Neither team was able to. find an answer for the other's pitching staff Through three and one - half innings the srame remained scoreless with each team's defense finding a way to pot three outs on the Scoreboard before the offense could push a run across the plate. Finally in3 the bottom of the fourth inning, Pleasant Grove was able to put Allyson West in scoring position and West was later able to score as the through to home plate was wide into the fence to allow West to bring across the only run . of the game. Whenever Ogden would put a run-1 ner on base, Stevens would find the answer as she would force a pop-up or strike the batter out Sunny Smith, he Viking's catcher, had a solution to base runners run-ners also. In the fourth inning Ogden had just placed a runner on first thanks to a base hit! Following Steven's pitch, Smith threw a rocket down the first baseline base-line to a waiting Natalie Nickell on first who tagged Ogden's base runner for a quick out. The Vikings had gained some payback for their basketball loss. But the celebration was short lived as the Pleasant Grove players play-ers raced to get home in time for their graduations that afternoon. The Vikings would also have little time following graduation to celebrate cele-brate because their next game was scheduled for early the next morning. morn-ing. Friday morning the Vikings faced Box Elder for a berth in the' state championship. Statistically Pleasant Grove came up with seven hits to two Box Elder hits. The Vikings committed three errors to the Bee's four errors. The difference in the game was the second sec-ond inning when the Bees scored all five of their runs thanks to two hits, three Viking errors and that Pleasant Grove Jr. High School tennis team members are, front, L-R, Brie Ann Jensen, Julie Lloyd, Abegil Nelson, Kyle Clark, Josh Wilkie, Brandon Walker, Blaine Lundberg.
