Show Mr Review Wednesday, April 25, 1990 - lage 10 Vikings nail down first place in region action By JACK HILL Thii gam wan everything that an aluminum bat game is uaually not. L)efene and pitching. When the last out wu recorded, on a btiarre play at home, Pleasant Grove came away with a 2 1 win FViday.over previously undefeated Orem. Dnn Hansom, after a shaky start, went the distance for ths Vikings, and finished with a sparkling two hitter and a big Region 4 win. ( Pensively, the Vikea used Quint Chipmans towering second inning to-run home run aa the margin of victory. Orem put an early scare into the visiting Vikings when Chuck Wood-house Wood-house led ofT with a walk and Mark Essinger belted the second pitch over Glen Montgomery's head in left Held for a fun scoring double. Hansgen then settled in to n tire the next three batters, the final pair on strike outs. Between the first and seventh innings, Hanagen pitched five no-hit innings. Trailing 1-0, Pleasant Grove came to bat in the second inning and Jug Jacklin, the second batter, "took one for the team", an inside curve ball that didn't break and it hit Jacklin in the left arm. Jacklin stole second on what was supposed to be a "hit-and-run' play but the pitch to Danny Norman was in the dirt. After an out, Chipman crushed a high fast ball that cleared the left field fence by at least 50 feet. Jacklin Jack-lin waited at home plate with the rest of the team to give Chipman some high fives and the Vikes led 2-1. That was the scoring for the game. Although the Vikes picked up a total of five hits and Eric Johnsen, the leadoff hitter in the sixth inning got to third base, the Tigers snuffed the rally. Quint Chipman (batting helmet) receives a "high five" at home plate after hitting a towering home run against Orem. Chipman's two runs-batted-in provided the difference as PG edged Orem, 2-1. Tyler Nelson led off the bottom of the seventh for the Tigers with a base hit up the middle and was moved to second with a nice sacrifice sacri-fice bunt from Steve Mackay. Nelson Nel-son moved to third on a ground out. With two down, both coaches wanted a "time out" to discuss the situation. When play resumed, Orern'a coach elected to send Nelson Nel-son from third in an attempt to steal home. Viking catcher, Justin Carlton, took Hansgen's pitch and tagged out the sliding Nelson by at least five feet to end the game. Had the play worked, the strategy would have been acclaimed as "brilliant". Unfortunately for Orem, it only worked for the Vikes and both sets of fans left the parking lot talking about the strange game ending play. PG rooters were happy with the win but the Orem faithful left questioning the idea of stealing home with two out with what would have been they tying run. PG emerged as the only Region 4 team without a league loss at 4-0, while the Tigers dropped to 3-1. In last week's Tuesday game, Nick Dorick and Eric Johnsen drove in two runs each to pace the Vikes to an 6 3 win at Mountain View. Johnsen was also the winning pitcher. PG hosted Provo last night after press time and will next play May 1, at American Fork. Tern's junior varsity pounded the Vikings, 13-6. Lady Vikes rap American Fork , ) r,. v MA Track events... (Photo by Ed Orellana) By JACK HILL Pleasant Grove downed American Ameri-can Fork 8-3 in Region 4 girls soft-ball soft-ball Thursday. Heather Johnsen went three for four at the plate in addition to pitching a complete game. The Lady Vikings scored in the third inning when Valyn Storey drew a base on balls and stole second. sec-ond. Johnsen singled sharply up the middle, so hard in fact, that Storey had to do some quick footwork foot-work to avoid being hit by the line drive. The delay to avoid being hit forced Storey to stop at third base. On the next pitch, Johnsen stole second and then Hillary West lined a single to center. Storey scored but an excellent throw from Stephanie Stepha-nie Richardson, the Lady Cavemen center fielder, got Johnsen at the plate to end the inning. American Fork tied the game in the bottom of the third on a walk to Radmall and a double by Williamson. William-son. In the fourth, Shannon West singled for PG, Angie Blackhurst walked and Amy Gordon sacrificed the runners to second and third. Amber Measom reached base on an error and Emilee Gilson drove in a run with a base hit PG scored five times in the fifth on base hits by Johnsen, Hillary West, Blackhurst and Measom plus two batters being hit by pitches. Measom's trip was the big run producer. In the sixth, leading 8-1, PG shuffled the line up and AF used a walk, a hit and an error to score two runs. Johnsen struck out a pair to end the Lady Cavemen rally and the game ended 8-3. In the junior varsity game, PG scored five times in the first inning and went on to win 10-4.
