Show Thursday, December 20, 2007 28 SPRINGVILLE HERALD SMPPITTS of SpringviUe History Helen Beardall Tis the season, or Christmas Christ-mas time in early days of SpringviUe. Fond memories of a Celebration of Christmas in Nauvoo of 1843 were shared by those who had attended the festivities. Aaron Johnson, whose home was located not far from the Prophet's house, (and now the Bishop Bish-op or spiritual leader of the settlers in SpringviUe) was among the group with the Prophet Joseph Smith celebrating. Plenty of food, gathering of friends, music, mu-sic, dancing, singing and praises sung to the Most High in thankfulness for the peace and plenty of the town located on the bend of the Mississippi, were remembered. Fashionable ladies dressed in beautiful attire, food served on beautiful stoneware plates, (either brought from England or manufactured in the States) warm, comfortable homes, and a temple being built on a high hill above the town, were points of discussion. The tragedy of the death of the Prophet and his brother, the expulsion of saints from Nauvoo, leaving leav-ing the temple behind, and the exodus of thousands of saints, forced to leave the comforts of life and warm homes, relegated to travel by either walking or riding in a wagon, the trials tri-als and suffering of saints as they were crossing of the plains, were foremost on the minds of many. Now settled in the little town of SpringviUe, a log home for their abode, a very few of the niceties they had pre- SHOP , Vyonsiqnment Visit Oup.Q &c OZLJn ujini. - , i 4 3 " ;CUi1nS lj.lfl l'rtU .. Rejoicing was great among a very thankful group of new settlers. Food for the festivities consisted of dried berries ber-ries gathered from the mountains, meat from the deer harvested by the men, a little milk from the cows, and a few fish that had been caught. As more settlers arrived ar-rived in SpringviUe, the pioneers left the site of the fort, buUt homes outside, expanded the perimeter of the town, fruit trees were planted, crops were grown and a wealth of material things became abundant. The Christmas season included larger festivities, with larger areas ar-eas to meet in, ward houses hous-es were built, and larger congregations could meet. On the home front, the merchants would come into town peddling their wares, some even brought oranges, which became a favorite item to find in a sock on Christmas morning, morn-ing, along with a few nuts or hard tack candy. Even later the wonderful Sears catalog would become a favorite item to receive in a household. Hours were spent thumbing through each page caref uUy, with items marked as to the likes and wishes of many famUy members. The advent of the mail man was so important, not only because he deUvered the long awaited letters from loved ones but also the parcels containing the items ordered from the catalog. Christmas trees were cut from the near by mountains, decorated with homemade candles, usually only lit once, on Christmas Eve or day, paper pa-per chains made from old catalogs or ocasionally newspaper, glued together with wheat flour paste, homemade. Today, SpringviUe homes are decorated beautifuUy, electric lights everywhere that can be turned on by a switch, homes are heated with natural gas, paved roads, snow plows that remove snow, grocery stores that supply each of us with our needed food supply, vehicles that are so convenient to help us with our travels, for most, jobs to support each of us, running run-ning water to our homes, heated at our beckoned call, appliances for cooking cook-ing and refrigeration. Thank you to aU the pioneers pio-neers who gave their all and sacrificed so much, and ventured to this town, of SpringviUe, who had a vision and a dream and helped with the making of SpringviUe. Merry Christmas, may we each remember what this day is celebrated for and may your holidays be filled with gratitude for one another. The Snippitts column will be on vacation for about a month. Thank you for all your support. Please write your histories and share with the Historical Society. ANNOUNCEMENT OF APPOINTMENT AND NOTICE TO CREDITORS Estate of Zella Katherine Doss.
