In a meeting held December, 14, the Utah State Board of Regents approved new mission statement for UVSC. The new mission statement, state-ment, as approved by the board of regents, is as follows: "Utah VaUey University Uni-versity is a teaching insti-" tution which provides op- portunity, promotes student stu-dent success, and meets regional educational needs, UVU builds on a. foundation of - "substantive scholarly and creative work to foster fos-ter engaged learning. . The university prepares professionally competent people of integrity who, as lifelong learners and leaders, serve as stewards stew-ards of a globally interdependent interde-pendent community." "This statement speaks of what UVSC is as an institution, in-stitution, as well as what it will be in the future," said Cameron Martin, assistant as-sistant to the president for institutional development devel-opment and planning at UVSC. In addition to identifying identi-fying the role of UVSC in the community, the change in the mission statement also opens up new doors for the institu tion. Along with the approval ap-proval of the new statement state-ment came the approval for UVSC to move from a Type IIIA institution to a Type If institution, according to current regional re-gional policies. As a Type II institution, UVSC will have the authority to offer of-fer graduate degrees up to the master's level in addition to the present two- and four- year undergraduate un-dergraduate degrees that are offered. "This is a watershed day for UVSC," said Martin. "Some may have thought it was a foregone conclusion to have this approved, given the leg islature's vote to create UVU. It wasn't. We had to go through the process of approval and receiving input. This wasn't a one-person one-person project. It was collaborative, and all of added, "but this is a very those involved have been significant step." dedicated to the core mis- sion of benefiting the stu- Govern a family as you dents of UVSC.
