Lana Creer-Hanris STAFF WRrTER According to John DeHaas Springville Rotary Ro-tary has been subbing for Santa "a good twenty plus years." DeHaas should know, he's one of the earliest members to join Springville Rotary. DeHaas coordinates the food purchase for the chosen cho-sen families. Former club president Ernie Parkin coordinates buying gifts for the children. They get needy family's names from social service agencies and set about making a good Christmas for them. This year the service organization or-ganization provided Christmas Christ-mas for eight families with a combined total of 25 children. The entire club supports the effort says DeHaas. Each member is assigned one child for whom they buy gifts. Each child gets clothing and toys. Then a dozen or so members meet early one Sunday morning, eat breakfast to plan, then shop at Sam's Qub. The store is opened early for the group. They purchased approximately $3,600 worth of food for the families this year. One Rotary source says DeHaas picked up the tab for this the food purchase last year. Each Rotarian is given a list of goods to buy, and a short description of the recipient family. They pile carts high with staples and Holiday goodies for each family. Huge loads of groceries from the carts are taken to Intermountain Lift, owned by Rotarian Ray Crandall south of town and divided into boxes for each family. On Wednesday, Wednes-day, Dec. 19, the group delivered de-livered the food and gifts. Wednesday is their regular reg-ular meeting night, this special night they divide up into groups and haul loaded load-ed boxes and bags to the doors of needy families. Subbing for Santa isnt the only service project this Rotary group adopts. "We do so many things -f sponsor spon-sor sports teams and academic aca-demic scholarships" says DeHaas. f 3 VBe& e cf 4Wie& I t 5 JV-Vr ' St easoiv 801-225-0001 550 Ho. Geneva Rd.
