Show Thursday, August 16, 2007 16 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Bald eagle leaves endangered species list August 8th was a day for this history books-it's the day the bald eagle officially soars off the list of threatened threat-ened and endangered species spe-cies under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). After plummeting to nearly 400 pairs in the lower 48 states in 1963, the population has rebounded to more than 10,000 pairs today. Secretary Secre-tary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the remarkable recovery of our national symbol in Washington, D.C. on June 28, 2007. The legal protections afforded af-forded by the ESA, along " with the crucial decision by the Environmental Protection Pro-tection Agency to ban the general use of the pesticide DDT in 1972, provided the springboard for recovery. Other efforts by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners included captive breeding program, reintroductions, law enforcement en-forcement measures, protection pro-tection of habitat around nest sites and land purchase pur-chase and preservation activities. ac-tivities. The service will work with state wildlife agencies agen-cies to monitor bald eagles for at least five years. If it appears that eagles again need the protection of the ESA, the service can propose pro-pose to relist the species. The bald eagle will continue con-tinue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Pro-tection Act and Migratory Bird Treat Act. Center St. Provo 373-6827 The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) is warning warn-ing Utah residents to stay away from public or private pri-vate pools when they are experiencing episodes of diarrhea. Over the past few weeks, many counties have seen dramatic increases in Cryptosporidium, a parasite para-site that causes diarrhea. As of Thursday afternoon, the Utah County Health Department was reporting report-ing 46 cases, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department had 24 cases and the Davis County Health Department was working on six cases. Typically, a county only sees about three cases in a year. The chemicals used to kill germs in swimming pools and other water are not effective in killing this parasite. In addition to avoiding exposure when you're ill, officials ask that you refrain from swimming swim-ming for two weeks after symptoms have subsided. Although Crypto can infect in-fect all people, some groups are more likely to develop more serious illness. Young children and pregnant women may be more susceptible to the dehydration de-hydration resulting from diarrhea and should drink plenty of fluids while ill. If you have a severely weakened immune system, you are at risk for more serious se-rious disease. Your symptoms symp-toms may be more severe and could lead to serious or life-threatening illness. Examples of persons with weakened immune systems sys-tems include those with HIVAIDS; cancer and transplant patients who are taking certain immunosuppressive immunosup-pressive drugs; and those with inherited diseases that l affect the immune, system. Officials say the best way to protect yourself and your family from this water-borne illness is to practice good hygiene. The Centers for Disease Control Con-trol and Prevention has six suggestions to help you stay safe. Don't swim when you have diarrhea. Don't swallow the pool water. Practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Take the kids on bathroom bath-room breaks or check diapers dia-pers often. Change diapers in a bathroom and not at pool side. Wash your child thoroughly thor-oughly (especially the rear end) with soap and water before swimming. For more information about Cryptosporidium, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site at: http:www.cdc.gov healthyswimming or the Utah Department of Health Web site at: www.health. utah.gov He who limps still walks. - Stanislaw Lee PUBLIC NOTICE Notice is hereby here-by given that the Springville City Council adopted two ordinances at the regular meeting held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007.
